Toffa

Toffa is a character from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

Toffa is an old man who can be seen standing right outside the Outskirt Stable, day and night. He never goes to bed and never even moves from his spot, even if it rains or if there is a thunderstorm.

The Royal White Stallion

When Link first speaks with Toffa, he asks him if he's seen a White Horse. He talks about a story that his grandfather told him, that the Royal Family had a white horse that would graze out by the Safula Hill. One of the customers who recently visited the stable said that they spotted a white horse on that same hill. Toffa thinks that it could be a relative to the royal family's white horse from back in his grandfather's day. He tasks Link with finding the white horse and bringing it back to him.[1] This will begin The Royal White Stallion side quest.

Toffa tells Link that the white horse supposedly has a beautiful, pure-white coat, distinguishing it from other horses.[2] Additionally, rumors are that the horse roams by itself, separate from other wild horses.[3]

After Link finds the White Horse on Safula, jumps on the saddle, and returns it back to stable, Toffa is shocked. He tells Link to register the horse at the stable and to bring it back over to him.[4] Toffa is forever grateful to Link, seeing this horse has made his life. With all the challenges happening around the land, simply living has been a struggle, but this moment has made it worth it to him. As a thanks for your help, he will present Link with the Royal Saddle and the Royal Bridle, two custom fitted items for the white royal horse that were passed down by his grandfather.[5]

The saddle and bridle will automatically be placed on the White Horse. Toffa will take one last look and says that there is no doubt that the horse is the grandchild of the same horse from long ago.[6]

Toffa will daydream a bit, stating that if he was a bit younger, he would go off on an adventure, riding the white horse alongside a girl like Princess Zelda.[7]

Tears of the Kingdom

Toffa can be found at the Outskirt Stable where he is tending to the Horses. The stable has recently taken in more horses, after the Gerudo Canyon Stable had to close down. After the Upheaval, the weather changed and the horses could not tolerate the extreme temperatures, so Toffa took them in.[8]

Toffa warns Link that if he is heading to the southwest, towards the desert, he should stop and rest at the stable. There was once a stable near Gerudo Desert, but it's long gone. He does mention the Mini Stable that is on the way, but it does not have an inn. The afternoon heat in the Gerudo Canyon can be ruthless.[9]

The Horse Guard's Request

Main article: The Horse Guard's Request

Speaking with Toffa at the Outskirt Stable will have him talk about a Skeletal Horse. He mentions that there is a rumor that such horses can be seen at nighttime at the Sanidin Park Ruins to the north.[10][11] Toffa wonders if these are spirits of dead horses that can't move on, or perhaps curses horses born from the Upheaval. While he thinks it's just a rumor, if it were true, he'd sure like to meet one. This will begin The Horse Guard's Request side quest.

At nighttime, Link can find some Stalhorses, just west of the Sanidin Park Ruins. He can sneak up behind and jump on top of one, riding it just like a regular horse. Link can then ride the horse back to the Ourtskirt Stable and ride towards Toffa. Todda is shocked to see the horse and begins to talk to it.[12] Toffa can hardly believe his own eyes, but after talking to the horse, he finds that he's not alone. He has friends somewhere deep and dark.[13] As a reward, Toffa will give Link a Purple Rupee, as well as a Pony Point.[14]

Toffa things that he has seen everything now, but wonders if it's possible to tame other animals. He mentions once trying to tame a bear or a deer, but he was thrown off. He thinks if somebody rode up on a creature other than a horse, then he'd really have seen everything.[15][16]

Link can travel to the Dalite Forest to the northwest, there there are often Mountain Doe and Mountain Bucks in the area. Link can sneak up behind one and mount it. After soothing the deer, Link can ride it back to the Outskirt Stable and show it to Toffa. Toffa is so excited to see a dear and will comment about its cute nose and sweet eyes. He will reward Link with a Silver Rupee, as well as another Pony Point.[17][18] He'll thank Link again, saying that there's still so much to learn in the world.[19][20] This will complete the quest.

Wouldn't that be amazing? If someone rode up on a creature other than a horse, then I'd have really seen everything." — Toffa, Tears of the Kingdom
  16. "I wonder if it's even possible to tame anything that isn't a horse. Back in my youth, I'd go into forests and try to tame all sorts of creatures. They'd send me flying every time. 20. "Huh? Oh, hm. I was just resting my eyes. It's a mite late for traveling, isn't it? Truly I live in a wonderous time. Skeletal horses are not more stories...
