The sky is where most of your travelling will take place in Skyward Sword. You fly on a species of birds known as Loftwings, and while most people have Blue Loftwings, Link has a special Red one.

The sky is a vast overworld with many floating islands, Skyloft of coarse being the main island, each of which holds some kind of secret, just like Fun-Fun island, where it seems to be nothing at the beggining, but if you do a side quest you will be rewarded with minigames. The islands and the sky are similar to the Wind Wakers ocean. In the lands below there are Large blue blocks which if Link slashes will be transported onto one of the floating islands, as a treasure chest, which Link then has to go and collect.

On the left side of the screen, while flying, you will see a altitude meter, which represents how high, or low, you are. Link is the red Loftwing icon in the center of the meter, and the sun icon means your high up, while the clouds icon means your low down. On the bottom of the screen are three wing icons, these are your boosts, which refill over time. You can also slow down by holding down the B button. To go up you move the Wii remote up, and to go down you move the Wii remote down.
