The sky is a vast overworld with many floating islands, Skyloft of coarse being the main island, each of which holds some kind of secret, just like Fun-Fun island, where it seems to be nothing at the beggining, but if you do a side quest you will be rewarded with minigames. The islands and the sky are similar to the Wind Wakers ocean. In the lands below there are Large blue blocks which if Link slashes will be transported onto one of the floating islands, as a treasure chest, which Link then has to go and collect.

On the left side of the screen, while flying, you will see a altitude meter, which represents how high, or low, you are. Link is the red Loftwing icon in the center of the meter, and the sun icon means your high up, while the clouds icon means your low down. On the bottom of the screen are three wing icons, these are your boosts, which refill over time. You can also slow down by holding down the B button. To go up you move the Wii remote up, and to go down you move the Wii remote down.

Skyward Sword

The Sky is where most of your travelling will take place in Skyward Sword. You fly on a species of birds known as a Loftwing, and while most people have blue and navy Loftwings, Link has a special Crimson Loftwing. The islands and the sky are similar to the Wind Waker's ocean.

The Sky is a somewhat vast overworld with many floating islands, with Skyloft being the main island and hub. Apart from Skyloft, there are four other "main" floating islands (Beedle's Island, Fun Fun Island, Pumpkin Island, and Bamboo Island, each of which holds some kind of sidequest or mini-game. There are a number of smaller islands that serve little function apart from quick exploration and the occasional treasure chest find. To make sky travel easier, there are also some islands that have sparkling portals in them that cause a bust of speed for your Loftwing when you fly through them. In the lands below the clouds, there are large crystal blocks known as Goddess Cubes which Link can slash with a Skyward Strike, causing them to be transported to The Sky. Link can then return to the sky and find that these Cubes have unlocked a specific treasure chest. These chests are scattered throughout the floating islands of The Sky.

While flying, the left side of the screen displays an altitude meter that tells you how high or low in the sky Link is, represented by the red Loftwing icon. The sun icon at the top of the meter is the highest point, and the clouds at the bottom of the meter represent the lowest altitude. To gain altitude, you tilt the front of the Wii remote up, and lose altitude, you tilt the front of the Wii remote down. On the bottom of the screen are three wing icons which act as your boosts and refill over time, similar to the carrots used by Epona in Ocarina of Time. You can also slow down your flight by holding down the B button.
