The Sword is the first weapon and sword obtained in The Legend of Zelda and, by extension, from the Legend of Zelda series. It is also available in BS The Legend of Zelda, and as an amiibo-exclusive weapon in Breath of the Wild.

The Legend of Zelda

The Sword is the first item available for Link to collect. While it is optional, not picking it up makes the game considerably more challenging. The Sword can be found on the Starting Screen, where there is a small cave on the northern rock. Inside, the Old Man says the legendary line, "It's dangerous to go alone! Take this".[1] He then gives Link the Sword, which can fire Sword Beams at full health.

The Sword is by far the weakest sword in the game - for instance, it takes eight hits to kill Aquamentus with the Sword, but only two with the Magical Sword. Later on in the game, it can be replaced by the White Sword and/or the Magical Sword.

Breath of the Wild

"A sword once wielded by a hero in an ancient age. When grasped, a strange sense of nostalgia washes over you. Take it when going alone would otherwise be dangerous."

— In-Game Description

The Sword is an amiibo exclusive weapon found in Breath of the Wild. It can be obtained by scanning a Link (The Legend of Zelda) amiibo, through the use of the amiibo Rune. Scanning the amiibo will drop various items from the sky, along with a treasure chest, which has a chance of containing the Sword, but can also contain different items. The amiibo can only be scanned once per day.

It represents the iconic sword used by Link in the first Zelda game, as referenced with the nod in the description above. The design comes from the promotional pictures of Link holding it from the original game, rather than the in-game sprite itself.

The sword itself is a one-handed weapon, with a base power of 22 and a durability of 27. Its power and durability are among the weakest of all amiibo exclusive melee weapons.

Non-Canon Appearances

This section describes a subject that is or may be outside the core Zelda canon.

BS The Legend of Zelda

The initial Sword is obtained from the Old Man in the Starting Screen cave at the beginning of Week 1, and is the only sword available in the first episode. It functions identically to its counterpart in The Legend of Zelda, including the ability to fire sword beams at full health.
