Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is the fifth installment in the Super Smash Bros. series, which will be released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on December 7th, 2018, worldwide. Every character that has appeared in the series makes their return, including 6 characters from the Zelda series. The game features many stages, pieces of music, items and more inspired by the Zelda series.

Characters

There are six playable characters from the Zelda series present in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Some characters have received new abilities, and have received a visual overhaul since their last appearances.

Link

By default, Link uses his outfit from Breath of the Wild, which includes the blue Champion's Tunic. He is also able to wear the Tunic of the Wild, also from Breath of the Wild, in place of his default garb. In addition to using the Master Sword and Hylian Shield, he can now use the Remote Bomb Rune, and has a new Final Smash, which features the Ancient Bow and Ancient Arrows.

Zelda

Zelda's appearance has also changed since the previous entry, wearing her clothes from A Link to the Past. She mainly uses magic attacks, creating light and fireballs from her fingertips. Her Final Smash has been changed to be a sealing move known as the Triforce of Wisdom.

Sheik

This character is largely unchanged in the moveset department, opting for melee combat using punches and kicks. This time, Sheik can be seen wearing the Stealth Chest Guard and Tights from Breath of the Wild, in addition to their traditional mask.

Ganondorf

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Ganondorf appears as he did in Ocarina of Time. He wields a claymore this time, and during his Final Smash, he transforms into Ganon, the Demon King, also as he appeared in Ocarina of Time.

Young Link

Young Link returns for the first time since Super Smash Bros. Melee, and is largely unchanged. He can be seen using the Kokiri Sword and the Deku Shield, with some bombs and arrows also in his arsenal. This also makes for the first time three different Links have appeared in a single Super Smash Bros. game.

Toon Link

Toon Link is the least changed character in the game, but has received some minor aesthetic upgrades. He uses similar items to the other versions of Link, including the Master Sword and the Hero's Shield from The Wind Waker.

Assist Trophies

There are currently two confirmed Zelda-themed assist trophies in the game, being Midna, originally seen in Twilight Princess, and the Moon, featured in Majora's Mask.

Stages

A total of 9 Zelda-themed stages are set to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, including one new stage, inspired by Breath of the Wild.

Returning Stages

  • Bridge of Eldin (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)
  • Gerudo Valley (Super Smash Bros. for 3DS)
  • Great Bay (Super Smash Bros. Melee)
  • Hyrule Castle (Super Smash Bros.)
  • Pirate Ship (Super Smash Bros. Brawl)
  • Spirit Train (Super Smash Bros. for 3DS)
  • Skyloft (Super Smash Bros. for Wii U)
  • Temple (Super Smash Bros. Melee)

New Stages

  • Great Plateau Tower - set at the top of the tower, the ceiling often crumbles down to reveal a platform, adding more depth to the stage.

Items

Several Zelda-themed items appear in the game, inspired by existing items in the Zelda series.

amiibo Support

amiibo will work in a similar way to how they did in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U, through the NFC function of the Nintendo Switch. It was confirmed during Nintendo's E3 presentation on June 12th, 2018 that all series of amiibo would be compatible with the game, not just the Super Smash Bros. series amiibo.
