Overview

Sturgeon is the wise old man with the large upper head. He lives on the top floor of the two floor house on Outset Island, which he shares with his brother, Orca.

He would love to live in a world where there are no loud noises or disturbances, and he despises the art of swordsmanship. This is contrary to the loud ways his brother Orca practices downstairs.[1][2] Even though he hates sword fighting, he used to be an accomplished swordsman when he was a young man. But with age, he grew to dislike it, and focuses his days on being locked in his room, reading factual books and expanding his endless knowledge. Because of his wiseness, he is known on Outset Island as the "Living Encyclopedia" and is commonly asked questions that the residents don't know the answers to. He angers very easily, and is sent over the deep end when his brother practices his strength downstairs and knocks everything off his shelves that he had placed so precariously there.

Sturgeon is the character in this game who teaches Link the basic controls, for example, how to look around and L-Targeting.[3][4] Sturgeon encourages Link to climb up the ladder and drop by his room to learn more tricks.[5][6] Lined along Sturgeon's walls are notes on paper he wrote to himself about useful items like how to save, how to use maps, and what Recovery Hearts are used for.[7][8][9]

At nighttime, Sturgeon can be found upstairs and his granddaughter joins him for the evening. When Link returns to the island, Sturgeon is concerned about the health of Link's Grandma. He suggests giving her a Fairy and mentions that long ago, it was easy to capture a Fairy in a Bottle up within the Forest of Fairies. However, ever since a giant rock blocked the fairy, that hasn't been the case.[10] He seems to give some hints that Link can use a Bomb to break the cracks of the rock that is blocking the Fairy Fountain.[11]

Hurricane Spin

Main article: Hurricane Spin

When Sturgeon was a young man, he set out with his brother to find and collect ten Knight's Crests, which was needed to become a true swordsman and learn a special move. They never found them all however, and Orca left the task to Link. After collecting ten Knight's Crest, he can bring them to Orca and learn the Hurricane Spin.

  1. "Such a racket! Can't you keep quiet!? You've knocked everything off my shelves, you dratted hooligan!" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  2. "Honestly! The hooligan I'm referring to is my younger and much less intelligent brother, who lives just downstairs... He hates studying. All day, every day, the lout just exercises and practices with his weapons. Does he exercise his brain? No! The brain's a muscle, too! ...I think. Anyway, the only thing he DOES study is the art of fighting. Right now, for instance, he's been studying fencing and whatnot. As if that's of any use to anyone... He simply doesn't know how to do anything besides exercise. I ask you, what's a brother to do?" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  3. "You, my friend, have just [L]-targeted me. You see, when you press [L], you can target certain objects. I, for one, use it quite often to talk to folks who are far away from me. Of course, even if there isn't anything around to target, you can press [L] to face forward, you know. It's quite handy, indeed. There are a myriad of other ways to use [L]-targeting, as well. Quite an ingenious little thing, if I do say so myself!" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  4. "That [L]-targeting you just did has a wide range of uses, my boy! Most certainly! For instance, you can use it to talk to far-off people, or if there isn't anyone to target, you can use it to face forward quickly. It's quite ingenious, I should say!" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  5. "Of course, that's not the only trick in my bag. Not remotely! I can teach you a few more things if you'll just climb up that ladder over there and drop by my room." — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  6. "If you desire the benefits of my wisdom, I can teach you many other things. Just climb up that ladder over there and come see me in my room for some expert tutelage." — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  7. "You're growing up, [Link], which means you're going to need as much wisdom as you can get from this point forward! And if you want to be wise, you must first know things! Now, I was born before you, so I know all sorts of things. Yes, I've been studying all manner of topics for many years now. Now, I can tell you're a smart lad... Lately, I've been thinking it's time for me to pass some of my wisdom down, and I think you're the one I'm going to pass it down to... Count yourself lucky, lad!" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  8. "Everything that you see tacked to the walls here is something that I've researched thoroughly. And before you ask, yes, I do know my filing system is odd. Organizational issues aside, however, it's all extremely useful information. You would do well to read it all very carefully. Reading leads to knowing, you know!" — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  9. "You're a smart lad, [Link]. You'll find that everything I've written down and tacked to my walls will be very useful in life. A lifetime of knowledge, all for you! You just be sure to take the time to read it all through very carefully. If you don't, you'll surely end up like that useless hooligan of a little brother of mine who lives downstairs." — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  10. "My granddaughter tells me that your grandmother is in poor health these days... Now, I'm certain that a little fairy dust would provide all the lift her spirits need, but... Well, the problem is, I haven't seen any fairies in these parts recently. Of course, long ago you could find a lot of them up by the old Fairy Fountain, and you could even capture them in empty bottles. Sure! It was easy as you please! Yes, there was a time when I used to like playing with fairies... Uh...ahem! In any case, ever since the fountain was blocked up by that huge rock, I haven't seen a one..." — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
  11. "I tell you, my boy, this island has seen more than its share of trouble lately. Night after night, monsters appear in town. The fiends! They come to ravage our peaceful little island. Why? None know. And yet...it seems they don't desire to do harm to us villagers... It's quite puzzling, even for my larger-than-average intellect." — Sturgeon, The Wind Waker.
