Skyward Sword features 24 Heart Pieces scattered across the land and sky, offering 6 additional Heart Containers to Link's total health. This, combined with the 6 starting hearts and the 6 Heart Containers acquired from various bosses, allows Link to have 18 hearts. To reach the full 20 hearts, Link must carry both Life Medals in his Adventure Pouch.

Heart Piece #1: As you pass through Faron Woods, you'll come to a spot where there's a natural land bridge that makes a sort of "m" shape, with the middle of the "m" being a ramp. Climb up and take it to the far left (towards the tree) and you'll see a platform extending from the Great Tree containing a Piece of Heart. Use the tightrope to get across, balancing with the Wiimote.

Heart Piece #2: Pumm, the owner of the Lumpy Pumpkin, is very proud and protective of his fancy chandelier (that has a Piece of Heart on top of it). On the second floor you can see signs warning customers not to bonk anything. Purposefully roll repeatedly into the railing or wall nearby to make it crash down, and then snag the Piece of Heart. Pumm is very upset with you and wants you to work off the debt. (This leads to Heart Piece #10 later)

Heart Piece #3: To access the Goddess Chest holding this Piece of Heart, you must use a Skyward Strike on the Goddess Cube located just outside of the entrance to the Skyview Temple. A chest in the sky will then become available to you, which can be found on an island south of Skyloft.

Conditions: Acquire the Beetle
Heart Piece #4: Within the Skyview Temple, in the central room with the giant bird statue (where you got the Beetle), run to the back side of the bird statue itself and face towards it. You will see a Piece of Heart behind bars. Stand a few steps away from it and use your Beetle. Fly it to the top of the bird statue itself and, as you near the top, you'll see an inner alcove in the neck of the statue that is only open on the north side. Hit the crystal switch to open the gate and claim your prize.

Heart Piece #5: After you have collected 10 Gratitude Crystals, take them to Batreaux and he will reward you with a Piece of Heart.

Heart Piece #6: When first traversing through the Eldin region, you'll come to a skeletal bridge in the middle of the lava. Turn right and climb up the nearby platforms, which circle around along upper ledges that eventually lead to a Piece of Heart.

Conditions: Acquire Bombs
Heart Piece #7: Within the Lanayru Desert, there's a thin passageway to the northeast corner of the map. You'll see one of the underground roads leads to one end of it (the right side). You can jump down onto that road and head to the passageway entrance, which is a cracked wall. Blow it up, then follow the path which eventually leads to a chest containing a Piece of Heart.

Conditions: Strike Goddess Cube #12
Heart Piece #8: Found inside of Goddess Chest #12 on Beedle's Island. The corresponding Goddess Cube is located at the north end of the Temple of Time. Link will have to ride on a minecart and deliver a Skyward Strike to activate the cube.

Conditions: Return Dodoh's Party Wheel
Heart Piece #9: Once you've retrieved Dodoh's Party Wheel, there will be a a game available to play. Pay Dodoh the money and he'll shoot you out of a cannon. Tilt the Wiimote to glide and control your fall. You want to avoid the "Dodoh Balls" and go through all of the rings. If you land on the multi-colored panel, you'll win 50 Rupees (times your multiplier). The first time you do this successfully, you'll also win a Piece of Heart.
A suggestion is to watch the panels when you go through the last ring. Whatever their positions are, they will be 2/3 of a turn to that same position when you land. So, if your target is at "3:00 o' clock" when you hit the last ring, it will be at about "7:30" when you land on the platform.

Conditions: Acquire the Goddess Harp
Heart Piece #10: After breaking the chandelier in the Lumpy Pumpkin, you'll have to make it up to Pumm. There are three things you need to do. The first objective requires an Empty Bottle. You will have to take a bottle of Hot Pumpkin Soup over to Eagus, the trainer at the Sparring Hall in Skyloft.
Next, you will have to carry a stack of pumpkins to the storage area on the Pumpkin Landing without dropping any of them. Lastly, at night time, you have to play the Goddess's Harp to an audience at the Lumpy Pumpkin, strumming based on the movements of the audience. After all three of these are done you will be rewarded with the Piece of Heart.

Heart Piece #11: Return to the southwest area of Faron Woods where you'll find a cracked wall. Use a Bomb to reveal a small cave hiding this Heart Piece.
Location: Skyloft
Conditions: Acquire the Water Dragon's Scale, Strike Goddess Cube #9
Heart Piece #12: Activate Goddess Cube #9 at Eldin Volcano and return to Skyloft after obtaining the Water Dragon's Scale. Jump into the main river of Skyloft and you'll find an underwater passageway along the east end of the river. Follow this underwater pathway and you'll reach the storage shed with the Goddess Chest located within.

Conditions: Strike Goddess Cube #14
Heart Piece #13: Activate Goddess Cube #14 in Faron Woods and return to The Sky. The Goddess Chest is located on an island east of the Lanayru beacon. The island has an inner and outer portion; the chest is on a high ledge on the inner of the island. You can either skydive onto the ledge or use the Clawshots.
Location: Skyloft
Conditions: Acquire the Double Clawshots
Heart Piece #14: Climb on top of the chimney of the Knight Academy, using the Clawshot on the target. Drop down and crawl through this area to find yourself within Zelda's room. Open the cupboard to find a Piece of Heart.
Location: Sandship
Conditions: Acquire the Double Clawshots
Heart Piece #15: Once you obtain the map, you'll see an area to the far right side of one of the mid floors that you can't reach, but it has a chest on it. From the main deck, climb the mast and use the gear pullies all over the place until you get to the very end. The last one leads to the stern (east). There's nothing here, but what's that in the distance? Clawshot the target on the beam at the back of the boat, drop down to the chest and snag a Piece of Heart.

Conditions: Strike Goddess Cube #21
Heart Piece #16: Activate Goddess Cube #21 at the Pirate Stronghold and return to Skyloft. The Goddess Chest can be found at the top of the waterfall island on the east side of the map. To get up there, you can use the Clawshots to grab onto some vines on a floating rock outside the Waterfall Cave, then use the Clawshots the reach the waterfall.

Conditions: Acquire the Bow
Heart Piece #17: If you visit Fledge in his room at night you will find him doing push-ups. Bring him two Stamina Potions and he will start to build his confidence. After obtaining the Bow, you'll find him outside the Sparring Hall with a new minigame for you. To earn a Piece of Heart, you'll need to score higher than 600 points. He will toss pumpkins and if you hit one, you will get 10 points. Each consecutive pumpkin you hit, you will gain more points, up to a maximum of 50 points per pumpkin. This minigame may take a few tries - the key is to maintain your accuracy to avoid losing your combo bonus.

Conditions: Acquire the Mogma Mitts
Heart Piece #18: While you are within the Fire Sanctuary, you'll find a soft soil spot at the far northwest part of the Temple. Underground you will find a Mogma and once you catch him, he will reward you with a Piece of Heart.
Location: Volcano Summit
Conditions: Acquire the Mogma Mitts
Heart Piece #19: Along the pathway in the Volcano Summit towards the Fire Sanctuary, you'll find a spot on the right side that you can use your Mogma Mitts. This is where the second wall of fire originally blocked your pathway and you needed to use water on the frog statue to pass. Dig underground and this will lead to the Piece of Heart.
Location: Bug Rock
Conditions: Strike Goddess Cube #24
Heart Piece #20: Activate Goddess Cube #22 at the Volcano Summit and return to The Sky. The Goddess Chest containing this Piece of Heart can be found on a ledge on Bug Rock located inside the Thunderhead.
Location: Shipyard
Conditions: Complete the Sandship
Heart Piece #21: After completing the Sandship, return to the Shipyard to take part in the Rickety Coaster minigame. There is a beginner (Scary!) and expert (Heart Pounding!) course. If you complete the expert course in under 65 seconds, you will be rewarded with a Piece of Heart.
Location: Sealed Grounds
Conditions: Defeat The Imprisoned
Heart Piece #22: Go to the area just outside the Sealed Temple (in the direction of the "Behind the Temple" Bird Statue). If you haven't already done so, play the harp near the Blessed Butterflies to cause a Goddess Wall to appear. Gorko the Goron must be present; if he isn't, return later in the quest.
Speak to Gorko and he will talk about the "ancient texts," referring to one of several different riddles he found in the texts. The riddles are hints to draw something on the Goddess Wall. Draw the item referred to in the riddle, and if you draw the correct shape on the wall, Gorko will reward you with a Piece of Heart. (Note: You can return to this area repeatedly later in the quest and Gorko will ask you to draw something else. Keep solving his riddles for additional prizes, including rare treasures and high-value Rupees.)

Conditions: Enough Rupees (1,600)
Heart Piece #23: This item is for sale for 1600 Rupees at Beedle's Air Shop, but won't be available until several other items have been purchased. If you complete the Beedle's Insect Cage sidequest first, Beedle will be so grateful he will let you purchase one item for half price, making it possible to get this Heart Piece for only 800 Rupees.
Location: Lanayru Gorge
Conditions: Give Life Tree Fruit to Lanayru
Heart Piece #24: After completing the Thunder Dragon portion of the Song of the Hero, you can return to the Lanayru Gorge to take part in the Thunder Dragon's Lightning Round. This is a boss challenge mode where you can play previously-defeated bosses again. If you can win four consecutive battles without stopping, you will get the Piece of Heart. (Note: You must stop battling after four wins to receive the Piece of Heart; 'big' prizes are awarded only for the most recent battle, not accumulated.)
