A theory is that, when Zant cursed Midna, he simply locked her hair in the shackle. With that theory aside, let's examine Midna's attack chain. She is extremely useful for attacking large swaths of enemies, as she uses her magic to spawn several twilight wolves. She can grasp enemies with her hair when you press X. This temporarily charges her darkness power. Now, to understand this move, you must first know that, the more warriors who excel in darkness attack a single enemy, the stronger their hits become. When the darkness gauge is full, though, your attacks are already max strength. This can be very useful in stages where you're fighting singular enemies at a time, like in the Adventure Map Quizzes.

In Hyrule Warriors, Midna uses the Shackle to control shadow wolves to help her fight enemies. Midna starts with a Cursed Shackle when she's unlocked after completing Twilight Field. After generations (not really) of waiting, we finally know what makes Midna's hair do what it does!
