Fast travel across the desert

"These seals use their large flippers to move through the sand as if swimming. They were once wild animals but have since been domesticated by the Gerudo. They rely on their excellent hearing to find their way while submerged in the sand. Their large, distinct tusks look pretty ferocious, but their favorite food is actually fruit."

— Hyrule Compendium Entry

Sand Seals are animals that appear in Breath of the Wild. Wild seals can be found in specific locations in the Gerudo Desert, including the Great Cliffs and the Gerudo Great Skeleton. They can also be rented from Gerudo Town for 20 Rupees.

Riju owns special Sand Seal, known as Patricia. When offered fruit, she will offer insightful comments which may help Link on his quest.

Sand Seals are crucial in taking down the Divine Beast Vah Naboris, as they offer a fast means of transport in order to get up close and personal with the beast.

Sand Seal Surfing

The primary use of Sand Seals is for travelling across the desert in the Wasteland region, where Link rides on his equiped Shield, holding on to a rope attached to the seal. Link can rent one from Gerudo Town, or they can be found in certain areas of the desert. In order to ride with a wild Sand Seal Link must sneak up on one, making minimal noise, as they have excellent hearing. If one notices Link, they will move away to safety. It is recommended that Link wears an armor set with a Stealth Up set bonus in order to catch a wild one, such as the Stealth Set. Rented Sand Seals keep pace, as well as staying put if Link dismounts, whereas wild seals will swim away.

Sand Seal Racing is a activity enjoyed by Gerudo in the desert, and is required to unlock the Raqa Zunzo Shrine. The racer rides through the desert, steering their seal through gates in order to maximise points.
