Uses

Currency

Rupees are the unit of currency within most of the Zelda universe. It is used in: Hyrule, Koholint Island, Termina, Labrynna, Holodrum, the Great Sea, the World of the Ocean King, New Hyrule, and Skyloft.

Locations and Uses

Rupees are found almost anywhere. Most commonly found when Link breaks jars, cutting grass, or killing enemies, Rupees are used in almost every Zelda game, except a few games where they aren't.

Jars

After breaking a jar, something usually pops out of it. The most common item that appears is a Rupee. Other items that can be collected include Magic Jars, Recovery Hearts, Bombs, or Arrows. It is often completely random of what appears and does not appear with a few exceptions. Example: In Ocarina of Time, the Ghost Shop has a jar that only drops a Red Rupee.

Grass

Cutting grass usually results in an item to appear. Rupees are the most common item to appear after cutting grass. Magic Jars, Recovery Hearts, bombs, and arrows can also be collected through this process.

Enemies

Upon defeating an enemy, they occasionally drop an item. This item could be almost anything. Rupees, Magic Jars, Recovery Hearts, and even Treasure are some of the most common items.

Uses

Throughout every Zelda game except for Adventure of Link, there are always shops. Whether it be the shop in Goron City, Zora's Domain, or Kokiri Forest; Sera's Sundries, Bomb Shop, or even Koume and Kotake's Potion shop, shops appear in every main area or village of the game. Link uses Rupees to buy shields, swords, Bombs, Arrows, Deku Sticks and Deku Nuts, Masks, Recovery Hearts, etc.

Games

Rupees are found in every game (The Legend of Zelda, Link's Awakening, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Twilight Princess, etc.) except for some games - Four Swords Adventure and Adventure of Link.

Values

Rupees have many different values, depending on the game. Usually, Green Rupees are worth one, Blue Rupees are worth five, Red Rupees are worth twenty, Purple Rupees are worth fifty, Silver Rupees are worth one hundred, and Gold/Yellow Rupees are worth two hundred, but there are some exceptions like in Twilight Princess, where Gold/Yellow Rupees are worth ten. In Twilight Princess, there is also an additional Rupee - Orange. It is worth one hundred. In some games, there are Rupee Shards to collect. Worthless on their own, four Rupee Shards make one Rupee.

Trivia

  • Rupees are the currency in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Pakistan, Mauritius, Seychelles, and Maldives.
  • In the original The Legend of Zelda, 'Rupee' was spelled Rupy and Rupies for plural.[1][2]
