Niko is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series, having appeared in all three of the Toon Link games.

Appearances

The Wind Waker

Niko is the lowest member of Tetra's Pirates until Link comes along. Then Niko feels high and mighty, and wants to see Link fail. He tells Link to swing from rope to rope across the Cargo Hold of the Pirate Ship. Niko gets Link to do this by promising him a prize. Link surprises Niko when he accomplishes the task. Niko then has to give Link a treasure. This happens twice. Through Niko, Link receives the Spoils Bag and Bombs.

Phantom Hourglass

At the beginning and end of Phantom Hourglass, Niko can be seen on board the Pirate Ship. He plays a very minimal role basically only being shown in this game to show how Phantom Hourglass is the direct sequel to The Wind Waker. He does, however, tell Link the intro of the game, which is basically a summary of The Wind Waker's events.

Spirit Tracks

Niko is Link's roommate in Spirit Tracks. They live together in a house along the beaches of Aboda Village. Similarly to Phantom Hourglass, he will tell Link the intro to the game, which is a summary of the Spirits of Good's fight against Malladus, the Demon King. This is the same Niko from the previous two games, being evidenced by him saying that Link in his Recruit Uniform looks just like an old friend of his when he was young,[1] and by when he gives Link the Shield of Antiquity, he says it belonged to an old friend of his from his adventuring days,[2] and considering that this shield is the same one Link has in Phantom Hourglass, it is a solid connection to the previous game.

Stamps

While Link is waiting for Alfonzo to hook up the Cannon to his train, Alfonzo says he should go visit Niko.[3] When he does, Niko says Link looks just like an old friend of his, which reminds him of the golden days.[4] Something from what he previously stated reminded him of something, as he will jump up and ask Link to do him a favor.[5] He will then proceed to explain to Link that he used to visit so many exotic places and always found a Stamp Station near these places. However, he never had anything to put the stamps in. He then continues to ask Link to use his Stamp Book to collect all the stamps. He himself missed and bring them to him.[6] He also hints at a prize for bringing the stamps to him.[7] With that, Link is off, looking for all of the Stamps.

Rewards

There are three main rewards that Link can receive from Niko for collecting the Stamps. The first is the Shield of Antiquity, which Link can get by collecting ten Stamps and bringing them back to Niko. The Shield of Antiquity is the best Shield of the game, and thus is very valuable. If Link had already bought a shield, Niko will apologize and say he can switch back whenever he wants.[8] The second prize is the Engineer's Clothes, and they can be won by collecting 15 Stamps. At this time, Niko will offer Link the choice of either staying in his Recruit's Uniform or wearing the Engineer's Clothes, hinting that he prefers the Engineer's Clothes himself.[9] The third and final reward is the Swordsman's Scroll #2. This allows Link to perform a Great Spin Attack. This technique is very useful, and even Niko recognizes it.[10]

  1. "Hi there, [Link]. How was the ceremony? So you're finally a real engineer. Ah, this is a happy day! Say, why are you dressed like a soldier? It's strange... You look just like a friend of mine from when I was a young man." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  2. "That shield once belonged to an old friend of mine from my adventuring days. Seeing you with it takes me back to when I was young. Sorry if you already spent money on a shield. Just leave it here with me! Come back if you ever want to switch shields." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  3. "Oh, but, it's going to take some time to get it ready. Come back here in a while. Why don't you go visit ol' Niko while you're waiting? I'm sure he'd be happy to see you." — Alfonzo, Spirit Tracks.
  4. "So glad you've come to see me again, [Link]! You know, you are the spitting image of one of my dearest old friends! Looking at you reminds me of those golden days..." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  5. "That reminds me of something! Since you can travel all over the world by train now... Would you mind doing a favor for ol' Niko here? [.]A favor?[.]I can't." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  6. "Back in the day, I used to love traveling. I visited so many exotic places. Every place I'd go, there'd be a station where I could get a special stamp. I never did figure out who built those stations... Anyway, collecting these stamps was a way to record my travels. I loved those little stamps more than anything! But back then... I didn't have anything with me to stamp them in. It was a sad state of affairs. Which brings me to that favor I was talking about, [Link]. Would you use this stamp book to collect those stamps for me? Here it is!" — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  7. "Please collect a whole mess of stamps for me. If you get a lot, I'll give you something special." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  8. "That shield once belonged to an old friend of mine from my adventuring days. Seeing you with it takes me back to when I was young. Sorry if you already spent money on a shield. Just leave it here with me! Come back if you ever want to switch shields." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  9. "Ah, yes, your engineer's clothes! I think you look much better in these. That said, if you ever want to switch back to your soldier getup, talk to me." — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
  10. "Oh, and this is something I got from an old friend. It's the great spin attack. To pull it off, draw a circle around yourself three times. Pretty neat, huh?" — Niko, Spirit Tracks.
