NES Remix is a Wii U eShop game based upon a series of short challenges from a number of Nintendo Entertainment System games, including The Legend of Zelda.

Gameplay

NES Remix takes sixteen Nintendo Entertainment System games and creates short, timed challenges based on the games. These come in two types:

  • Short challenges taken directly from a game, which may be as simple as obtaining the sword from the cave on The Legend of Zelda's Starting Screen as quickly as possible.
  • "Remix" challenges, which alter the games in ways that include turning the screen upside down, pixelating the screen, changing controls, or even changing the character being played as (e.g., as playing as Link, with his The Legend of Zelda moveset, in a stage from Donkey Kong).

The challenges are sorted, by game or by a "Remix" group, into Stages with a variable number of challenges, some of which are time-limited. The player's success at a Stage is measured in up to three stars, primarily based on clear time. Completing all objectives successfully in a fast enough time turns the stars into Rainbow Stars. A certain number of stars are required to unlock further challenges.

The player is given a certain number of lives (represented as hearts) to complete each stage. If the player dies, or otherwise fails the challenge, it is deemed a "MISS" and the player loses one life. Running out of lives leads to a game over, and the choice to "Continue" or "End". If the player chooses to Continue, they can only earn a maximum of one star from that run.

Challenges are based upon the following sixteen games. Twelve have their own series of challenges, while the remaining four only appear in the "Bonus" series, which also include further challenges based on the main twelve games:

  • Balloon Fight
  • Baseball (Bonus only)
  • Clu Clu Land
  • Donkey Kong
  • Donkey Kong Jr.
  • Donkey Kong 3 (Bonus only)
  • Excitebike
  • Golf
  • Ice Climber
  • Mario Bros.
  • Pinball
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Tennis (Bonus only)
  • The Legend of Zelda
  • Urban Champion (Bonus only)
  • Wrecking Crew
