"These male deer are usually found deep in the forest. They're well known for their huge, branching antlers, which they'll swing in self-defense if threatened. Deer are cautious by nature so it can be tricky getting close, but if you can capture one, you may be able to take it for a ride."

— Hyrule Compendium Entry

A Mountain Buck is an animal found in Breath of the Wild. They are easily identifiable by their long antlers, and appear in forests, rarely in plains. Albeit uncommon, it's possible to spot both bucks, as well as their female counterparts in places like the mountains of Hebra. When killed, it drops Raw Prime Meat. If Link approaches stealthily, he can mount and ride this animal, though he cannot spur it on to gain a speed boost and it cannot be registered in a stable. Bucks are typically herd animals, so they will all be alerted of Link's presence, and subsequently flee, if any of the does or other bucks see Link. Mounting and riding one is necessary to complete the The Crowned Beast Shrine Quest to reveal the Mezza Lo Shrine. Luckily, the Rabia Plain, in which the quest is located, has a high population of mountain bucks (as well as mountain does).

As part of the quest Good-Sized Horse, the Mountain Buck cannot be sold to Zyle, as he refuses to buy it since it's not a horse.
