"Mothula
This giant moth is no friendly butterfly! Conserve Magic power as Link makes his way through the Skull Palace because he will want to use the Fire Rod on Mothula. If he runs out of Magic Power and doesn’t have any Magic Potion to refill his Magic Meter, use the Sword on Mothula, but use extreme caution-Mothula’s lair is very dangerous. The floor moves and shifts directions, the spikes release from the wall and travel across the floor and Mothula will serve up a triple-beam attack. The third precious Crystal will be your reward for defeating Mothula.
"

— Nintendo Power Player's Guide

Mothula is a boss that is encountered in the Skull Woods, the third Dark World dungeon in A Link to the Past. In A Link to the Past (GBA), Mothula appears as one of the four guardians of the four blades of the Four Sword in the Palace of the Four Sword.

Boss Strategy

"If Link has run out of Magic Power, he’ll have to use the Master Sword to fend off the ghastly Mothula. Wait for the triple-beam attack to clear before approaching her."

— Nintendo Power Player's Guide

Once Link drops down into the room where Mothula resides, the mechanical floor will start to move which is totally surrounded by Blade Traps, posing another threat Link has to avoid besides Mothula, that start to slide across the room. Mothula will attack Link by shooting out lasers that come in groups of three at regular intervals while trying to ram into him. While avoiding Mothula and the Blade Traps, Link can attack Mothula by using his Sword, but this is not practical due to it being harder to hit Mothula with the sword due to its erratic movement. Link could use the dungeon item, the Fire Rod, to attack Mothula from afar. This is the most efficient method to defeat Mothula since the Fire Rod is twice as powerful as the Master Sword. However, the Fire Rod uses alot of magic power, so Link should either bring Green Potions or Blue Potions to restore his magic. If Link runs out of magic, then he should defeat Mothula with the Sword. Another useful method is for Link to release a Bee or the Golden Bee since Mothula is the only boss in which the Bee can attack it. The Bee proves to be useful because Link is able to focus on dodging the sliding spikes while the bee attacks Mothula in his place. Once Link defeats Mothula, he is rewarded with a Heart Container and the Third Crystal.
