Habitat: Forbidden Woods
Favorite Thing: Makar
This plant-monster is a gigantic parasite that lives in the depths of the Forbidden Woods. Only by cutting loose all of its disgusting tentacles with the Boomerang will its tender core be revealed.

Kalle Demos is the Boss of the Forbidden Woods, the second dungeon in The Wind Waker. It appears as an enlarged Deku Baba-like being that lives in a bulb and attaches itself to the ceiling. After Makar fell into the Forbidden Woods, Kalle Demos swallowed him once he got too close. The beginning of the battle with Kalle Demos is vaguely similar to Barinade from Ocarina of Time, as Link uses the Boomerang to cut the strands holding it up to the ceiling.

Strategy

Makar before being eaten by Kalle Demos

Immediately before the battle begins, Kalle Demos will attach itself to the ceiling by using its vines. Link can use the Boomerang to target them and cut them loose. Link will also need to avoid the vines themselves, which will often pop out of the ground next to Link and attempt to attack him. Link can simply run away from these; they will only follow him around the room for a short period of time. The vines do have a secondary attack; if they glow, then they are about to whip to the ground trying to hit Link.

Once all of the vines have been cut down, then it is time to charge in and attack the center of Kalle Demos. Attack the center head a few times, then quickly retreat back outside the boss. If Link stays there too long, the petals will fold in and cause him some heavy damage. This process needs to be repeated until Kalle Demos has been defeated, which causes it to wither and die. Makar will be freed and a Heart Container will be left where Kalle Demos once resided.

Kalle Demos' head has 16 HP, meaning it takes 16 slashes to kill. However, this is low enough that is possible to kill it in a single cycle. 4 quickspins are needed, as quickspins actually hit twice; each hit doing 2 damage. This is usually not too relevant against lesser enemies, who will get hit out of the way and not take the 2nd hit, but Kalle Demos is a boss, and as such does not recoil out of range, causing each quickspin to deal 4 damage. It is possible to pull 4 quickspins off before Kalle Demos ends the critical phase, and in fact, this is actually faster than instakilling with Forest Water.

Trivia

  • It is possible to defeat Kalle Demos with a one-hit kill, though it is still faster to brute-force it to death with quickspins. When leaving the Forest Haven towards the Forbidden Woods, use a Bottle to snatch some of the Forest Water around the Great Deku Tree. After using the Boomerang to detach Kalle Demos' vines from the ceiling, it will fall to the ground. This will leave its central head exposed and open to attack. Dump the Forest Water on its head, which will automatically defeat the boss.
  • Kalle Demos does bear some resemblance to Barinade from Ocarina of Time, They are both attached to the ceiling via tendrils and must be detached using the Boomerang.
