The Interlopers were once a group who created the darkest of magic. This dark magic was known in Twilight Princess as the Fused Shadow. The Fused Shadow was created in order to take the holy relic known as the Triforce. When the Interlopers attempted to take the Triforce, they were stopped by the Light Spirits. The Light Spirits intervened and banished them to the darkest of dimensions, the Twilight Realm. In Twilight Princess, you are told of this in the sense of a nightmare by one of the Light Spirits, Lanayru.
