The Hyrule Compendium is a basic feature of the Sheikah Slate, which lists various Creatures, Monsters, Materials, Equipment and Treasure photographed by Link during his travels through the various regions of Hyrule.

Initially, it was corrupted along with the Camera rune when Link woke up and found the Sheikah Slate in the Shrine of Resurrection. After Link meets her, Impa points him towards her sister Purah in the Hateno Ancient Tech Lab to repair it in the Locked Mementos main quest. After Link relights the Ancient Furnace at the tech lab, Purah uses the Guidance Stone to restore these functions, enabling the Hyrule Compendium for the first time. Information is added to the compendium by photographing items with potential entries using the Camera rune.

After the Sheikah Sensor is upgraded to the Sheikah Sensor + and Link completes the Sunshroom Sensing side quest, Symin will begin to offer pictures of items for sale for 100 rupees per picture to fill out the Compendium with entries Link is unwilling or unable to photograph for himself. Some enemy entries - primarily bosses - are "Elite Enemy Pictures" which cost 500 rupees per picture, and can only be purchased after Dark Beast Ganon has been defeated at least once (if this is the case, the save file is marked with a star in the menu). Symin sells pictures only by category, meaning the exact entry Link purchases is random unless he only has one entry to buy in the category.

Link can use Compendium entries to target those items with the Sheikah Sensor +. He cannot target items he does not have a valid, photographed entry for; although this does not distinguish between entries Link has purchased and taken for himself.

If Link completes the entire Compendium, through either photographing for himself or through purchase, Symin will be amazed and give him the Classified Envelope as a reward.

While the Hyrule Compendium and Camera are technically present on the Purah Pad from when Link picks it up in the Garden of Time, Zelda forgot to unlock them for him. As such, he cannot use the Hyrule Compendium until Robbie unlocks them during the Camera Work in the Depths quest. Initially, it is blank, and Link must once again fill it out from scratch.

When the Purah Pad's sensor is upgraded to a sensor +, Link can again use the Hyrule Compendium for targeting any item with a valid entry, as in Breath of the Wild.

Robbie has a finished copy of the Hyrule Compendium on his "compendium database". Link can purchase pictures from this in the same way he could from Symin previously.
