Fans' lack of knowledge forced them to create a few educated guesses on who he really is. For example, many people think of him as one of Link's ancestors, another Link from another story or game. The Hero's Shade stated that he had accepted the role as a hero long ago, strengthening fans' beliefs. Also, at one point, the Hero's Shade says that forgotten ways "do not leave our bloodline". Saying 'our' instead of 'my' could possibly mean that he is Link's ancestor, but not exactly one of the previous heroes in green tunics. People have closely watched the Hero's Shade and listened to everything he said, relating the faint resemblance of his shield and sword and the way he stands to prove that he was once Link.
