Hero's Path Mode is a map view allowing Link to see the routes he has taken across Hyrule in Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom.

Breath of the Wild

This section describes a subject exclusive to game downloadable content and may not apply to the base game.

Hero's Path Mode was exclusive to the Breath of the Wild Expansion Pass DLC. It was introduced in the first DLC "wave," the Master Trials. It adds a new function to Link's map, allowing him to track his previous 200 hours of gameplay, with playback features included. The player can speed up, slow down, pause, enable or disable icons from the map, and more. This map mode allows Link to find locations he has not visited yet, making the collection of items such as Korok Seeds much simpler. Link's deaths are also tracked on this mode, including the latest death, which can help the player locate where they previously died so that they can continue exploring.

It is automatically unlocked on booting up the game after the DLC purchase, with no questline required to obtain it.

Tears of the Kingdom

In Tears of the Kingdom, Hero's Path Mode works in a mostly similar manner to Breath of the Wild. By default, all paths are shown on all layers - Depths, Surface and Sky - but paths on one of the other two layers are slightly faded. Paths from other layers can be toggled off, along with place names and icons.

Rather than being a DLC purchase, it is included within the base game; but must be unlocked by the Presenting: Hero's Path Mode! quest; which itself requires completing one dungeon, along with the Camera Work in the Depths, A Mystery in the Depths and Hateno Village Research Lab questline.
