Throughout the Zelda series, multiple types of hammers appear in various games. These hammers vary in size, name, and design, but they all served Link the same purpose: Smashing Objects. Every variation of a hammer has its limitations, and thus must be used accordingly.

Adventure of Link

In Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, Link's hammer is used to destroy boulders and forests. Link receives the hammer in a hole deep in Death Mountain. This was the first appearance for the hammer, and set the concept for games following this one

A Link To The Past

In the SNES game, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, the hammer returns. This time it's called The Magic Hammer. Contrary to its name, it doesn't cost any magic power to use. This weapon is used to lower stakes to advance further in the game, or to solve puzzles. It is found at the first dungeon in the Dark World, Dark Palace.

Ocarina of Time

In the third appearance of a hammer, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, the hammer is known as the Megaton Hammer. This hammer is very useful against Torch Slugs because it flips them over to their weak point. It is also used on Rusty Switches that cannot be pressed otherwise. It can also smash up red boulders that bombs cannot, most of these boulders are located around Death Mountain. It is the dungeon item of The Fire Temple, the second Adult Link temple.

Wind Waker

In Link's first adventure on the gamecube, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, the hammer is known as the Skull Hammer. It is aquired at the Forsaken Fortress the second time you visit it. In can be used to smash up spiked or wooden pegs and it also serves as a very powerful weapon against enemies.

Phantom Hourglass

In the first Zelda game for the DS, The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass, Link gets an item simply called the hammer. It is useful against enemies that you were unable to defeat without it. It is found on the 3rd Floor of Mutoh's Temple, and is required to defeat the boss, Eox.
