Fish are recurring creatures in The Legend of Zelda series. They start out as simple creatures that don't mean much, but have since expanded to become involved in Trading Sequences.

Appearances

A Link to the Past

In A Link to the Past, a fish can be caught in the drained water in the south of Light World. If Link throws the fish back in the pond, it says, "Thank You", and then gives Link a number of Rupees. Furthermore, when Link goes to the Bottle Merchant and gives him the fish, he will give Link a variety of items.

Link's Awakening

Fish in Link's Awakening can be found in the Fishing Pond, a small fishing area located north of Mabe Village. There are no specific types, just small and large ones. Depending on the size of the Fish caught, Link receives rewards from the Fisherman whenever he catches one, including a Piece of Heart.

Fin Piranha

Main article: Fin Piranha

Additionally, there is a Fish-like enemy in Link's Awakening called Fin Piranhas. They are really weak enemies, but can be a bit unpredictable. They can be found in flooded caves and in Goponga Swamp, swimming back and forth under the water.

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, Link can store fish in a Bottle and catch them in the Fishing Pond. It is also required to enter Jabu-Jabu's Belly in order to defeat the third boss, Barinade. Dropping a fish in front of him results in him opening his mouth and sucking in Link. In the Fishing Pond, Link can be rewarded with the Golden Scale if he catches a 13 pound fish.

A Fish is the seventh item of the trading sequence in Oracle of Seasons. It is a market fresh Fish,[1][2] and thus it is Ingo's dinner,[3] as well as being Mittens' favourite food.[4] The Fish's sprite is blue, leading one to believe it might have been designed after the real world Bluefish.

The Fish is received from Ingo, a vase collector[5] who lives by his lonesome in a house in Sunken City. As a vase collector, Ingo greatly desires the Goron Vase, a vase that Biggoron has. However, no matter how many times Ingo asks Biggoron for the vase, he won't give it to Ingo, even in exchange for a Fish.[6] If Link has collected the Goron Vase and talks to Ingo, Ingo sees the vase and begs Link to give it to him.[7] After placing it nicely into his collection, Ingo rewards Link with the Fish.[3]

The Fish can be used to acquire the eighth item of the sequence, the Megaphone. The Megaphone can be obtained from Mittens' Owner, a man found in the southern portion of North Horon. Mittens' Owner's cat, Mittens, is at the top of a tree, and refuses to come down.[8] However, if Link brings the Fish to Mittens' Owner, he asks to have it so he can get Mittens down.[4] After thanking Link for the Fish,[9] he uses the Fish to successfully get Mittens to come down. Overwhelmed with joy, Mittens' Owner rewards Link with the Megaphone.[10]
