At the start of Ocarina of time you are able to carry up to 10 Deku Sticks. They are useful for lighting torches and deal twice the damage of the Kokiri Sword, but break upon hitting any object. In order to get the second Deku Stick upgrade, you must go to the Forest Stage, located in the Lost Woods, and show the Deku Scrubs the Skull Mask. Then go and speak to the Forest Stage Leader, who will tell you that all of the Deku Scrubs agree that you look like their totem, so they will reward you with the second Deku Stick upgrade.
