At the start of Ocarina of time you are able to carry up to 10 Deku Sticks. They are useful for lighting torches and deal twice the damage of the Kokiri Sword, but break upon hitting any object. In order to get the first Deku Stick upgrade, you must go to the Lost Woods. Below the bridge connecting Kokiri Forest to Hyrule Field, there is a Business Scrub. Bounce back the nuts it shoots and then go and talk to him. He will tell you that he can upgrade your Deku Stick carrying abilities for 40 Rupees. Pay him the 40 Rupees and receive the first Deku Stick Upgrade.
