The Compass is a dungeon item that locates the Boss and Treasure Chests located in the dungeon. However, every game it is in has a different use for it. It has appeared in numerous games, and it is a very useful item. There is always one compass in every dungeon.

Appearances

The Legend of Zelda

In The Legend of Zelda, the Compass is used to find the location of each Triforce Shard that lies within any and all of the dungeons in the game. However, in Death Mountain, the final dungeon of the game, it cannot be used to locate a Triforce Shard because Link has already collected them all. Instead, it is used to show where Princess Zelda lies in the dungeon via a blinking dot on the map. It is usually found at the beginning of the dungeon, to give players a sense of where to go.

Link's Awakening

The compass in Link's Awakening shows the location of each treasure chest and the Nightmare. It also beeps whenever Link enters a room with a Small Key or some other secret.

Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask

Ocarina of Time's Compass shows the locations of all the Treasure Chests in the dungeon on the map. It also shows the location of the dungeon Boss. In addition, it will show Link's location on the map, and also marks what door he entered from. It is identical in use and appearance to the one in Majora's Mask.

Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages

The Compass in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons will tell Link where all the treasure chests are in each dungeon. It also shows where the dungeon boss is. Similar to the one in Link's Awakening, this version of the compass will beep whenever Link enters a room that has a key in it.

The Wind Waker

In The Wind Waker, the Compass also shows the locations of the treasure chests and the locations of the dungeon boss.

Twilight Princess

Twilight Princess' Compass has the exact same use as the compass in Ocarina of Time. It reveals Treasure Chests and the boss on the map, and shows Link's location. However, it has a more advanced use in this game; it will show Link the location of certain items in each dungeon, and this item depends on which dungeon Link is in. In the Forest Temple, it shows Link where each caged Monkey can be found. In the Snowpeak Ruins, the Compass will show Link the location of every Canonball in the dungeon. Also, in the Temple of Time, the Compass will show Link the location of the Ancient Statue that he requires the reach the Boss, Armogohma. And, last but not least, in the Palace of Twilight the Compass will shot Link the location of the two Sols. This Compass is by far the most useful one in the series.

Spirit Tracks

Main article: Compass of Light

Spirit Tracks does not have a dungeon Compass, but rather an item called the Compass of Light. This compass is used by Link to reveal the location that Malladus and Chancellor Cole are hiding in, which is revealed to be the Dark Realm.
