"You got the Clawshot! This is a claw at the end of a long chain." -In game description

Twilight Princess

This tool consists of a claw connected by a long chain that can launch and pull Link towards something farther away, or pull a lighter object towards him. The item could be considered an advanced version of the Hookshot, which has appeared in numerous other games. The reason for creating a new object with the same purpose is unknown.

Unlike the Hookshot, the Clawshot does not allow Link to grapple onto treasure chests. It can attatch to a number of surfaces, such as vines, metal gratings, and specific grappling spots. What makes the Clawshot unique is that it can be used underwater, unlike a variety of other items. It functions primarily the same as the Hookshot, except it has the ability to raise and lower Link after being deployed.

The Clawshot is obtained in the Lakebed Temple after defeating the Deku Toad. The second Clawshot, forming the Double Clawshot, is obtained in the City in the Sky. The Clawshot can be used to complete the first stage of the STAR Game in Hyrule Castle Town. It is necessary to have the Double Clawshot in order to complete the second stage of the game.

In the City in the Sky you get an upgrade to the Clawshot, the double Clawshot. This allows you Clawshot over to a target and then from that target Clawshot to the next one.

Skyward Sword

The Clawshot has the same use as it did in Twilight Princess. Link will obtain the Clawshots once he passes the Lanayru Silent Realm trial. Unlike in Twilight Princess, Link obtains the Clawshots as a pair automatically. The Double Clawshots are mainly used to explore the Lanayru Sand Sea.

Theory

Theory warning: This section contains theoretical information based on the viewpoints or research of one or several other users. It has not been officially verified by Nintendo and its factual accuracy is disputed.

It is possible that the Clawshot is of Oocca origin, as the second Clawshot is found in the City in the Sky, along with numerous clawshot-sensitive targets.
