The Castle Courtyard is a garden in Hyrule Castle where Princess Zelda spends her time, and is where Link first meets her. Once Link has sneaked past the guards, he can enter the courtyard and introduce himself to Zelda, and she introduces herself too. Zelda tells Link that she dreamt of dark clouds covering the sky and a light shot out of the forest, a figure appeared, holding a stone, followed by a fairy. Zelda knows that Link is the one from her dream, and the one who will save Hyrule from malevolence. A few minutes later, she will tell a story about the Golden Goddesses. After, Zelda will ask Link if he wants to look into the window, and if he does, he will see Ganondorf, the vile man whom Zelda believes is the one who will overcome and cause darkness to enshroud the land of Hyrule. Zelda bestows her letter with her autograph signed on it upon Link in order for him to show it to the guard guarding the Death Mountain Trail in Kakariko Village. Impa waits for Link after talking to Zelda, in order to teach Link Zelda's Lullaby.

Princess Zelda waits for Link to collect the other two Spiritual Stones and bring them to her. When Link has collected the two Spiritual Stones, and on the way to the Hyrule Castle, he sees Zelda escape from Hyrule Castle with her guardian Impa, and behind them, Ganondorf. She will then quickly throw the Ocarina of Time against Link and ride away. If Link takes it after, he will receive a vision by Zelda, who tells him to play the melody Song of Time in front of the altar in the Temple of Time.

When Link has completed his quest and return to a Child, an ending cutscene will show Link meeting Zelda once again.

Trivia

  • In the Castle Courtyard, to the right side inside the window, are paintings of major characters from the Mario Series. In the 3D version, the paintings are replaced with a stage from Super Mario Bros.
  • The window Zelda peeks through in the Castle Courtyard was first set off to be a peephole, but was later decided to be a window.[citation needed]
