??? is a mysterious hand that first appeared in a minor sidequest in Majora's Mask, but also appeared Oracle of Ages and Skyward Sword.
Appearances
Majora's Mask
This was where ??? made its first appearance, it was located inside the toilet of the Stock Pot Inn in Clock Town. ??? appeared as a dull-coloured hand that stretched out of the toilet asking for paper. Link can give ??? a Title Deed, this concludes the sidequest and Link is rewarded with a Piece of Heart (you can also hand over the Letter to Kafei or the Express Mail).
Oracle of Ages
The hand appeared very similar in this game as in Majora's Mask, and was also now located in a toilet craving paper. ??? is part of the Trading Sequence of Oracle of Ages so if Link gives ??? the Stationery Link will receive the Stink Bag in return.
Skyward Sword
In this game ??? had a slightly bigger role than in the previous titles, and it was confirmed to be female and looked more like a glove than a hand. Just like in Majora's Mask, ??? in Skyward Sword is asking for paper from within a toilet, however, this toilet is inside the Knight Academy on Skyloft. After speaking to ??? for the first time you can find Cawlin just outside the toilet door during the day, he will ask you to deliver a love letter to Karane, this is where the sidequest splits into two parts.
You can choose to give the letter to ???, this will cause ??? to fall in love with Cawlin and if you visit Cawlin in Groose’s room at night you can see ??? giving Cawlin nightmares, but since she is so happy to be around him she rewards Link with 5 Gratitude Crystals, and the poor Cawlin won’t be able to sleep for the rest of the game. Your other option once you receive the letter is to give the letter to Karane who will become unsure whether she wants to go out with Cawlin or not. Go speak to Pipit upstairs and he will realize how much he really loves Karane. Run back down to Karane and a cut-scene will start in which both Pipit and Cawlin ask Karane out, and Karane chooses Pipit. Cawlin runs off crying, ??? will leave forever and the player will receive 5 Gratitude Crystals from Pipit.
