I'm not sure what kind of reference would work for Beedle offering to trade something for a beetle. I have noted this behavior in game, and it's not one of his normal wares.

Specifically, Beedle will offer to trade one of a select few items that he won't sell normally for a beetle. There's some random element to the trade, but it will always be a consumable which will produce a low level effect of the same variety as the beetle would in a potion. These will range in resale value from 40 rupees to 120 rupees, though most of the time it seems like it's a 50 rupee trade for a Bladed Rhino Beetle, a 60 rupee trade for a Rugged Rhino Beetle, and a 70 rupee trade for an Energetic Rhino Beetle. I've only gotten an item worth more than 10 rupees more or less than the typical for a particular beetle for an energetic rhino beetle, and that was a 120 rupee Energetic Elixir both times.

Mighty Elixirs will, of course have a Bladed Rhino Beetle in their recipe. I was scandalized the first time I saw that... and then realized that beetles really don't live that long, so of course some will occasionally die.

... I should make a table. Tgape (talk) 06:02, January 9, 2020 (UTC)

This would be awesome to document in some sort of fashion. I've been playing and I just mash A over and over every time I talk to him... because I don't want to give him my Beetles. I've done it 100+ at this point that I've stopped paying attention... Mases (talk) 07:28, January 9, 2020 (UTC)

These entries are listed in the order of Beedle's preferences.

My process over the course of collecting this data varied slightly as I collected it. I first saved right in front of Beedle's spawn point for Wetland Stable. I then made the first trade with an energetic rhino beetle, went into his sell menu, and scrolled to the end to get the sell price of the Hasty Elixir he just gave me. Rather than selling it, I then backed out of the conversation, went into my inventory and checked the recipe. After recording this detail, I then went and loaded from the save file. I repeated that 14 times, noting that the ingredients list and price for each item did not vary. I then refused to trade for a Fairy Tonic. Sorry, Beedle, but that's just not a good deal.

Beedle said,

Really? But this is such a good deal... and that beetle really wants to be with me.
I just don't understand your thought process here...
...
Maybe I'll sneak into his inventory and replace it with a common beetle while he's not looking. He won't know the difference...
No, I'll hire someone to do it for me. No need to get my hands dirty...
Hehehehehe...
...
Oh, you're still here? I thought you left.
Uh, well let me know if you change your mind!
Anyway, back to business...

After this, I accepted new trades to get their price and ingredients, but just turned down trades for something I'd already recorded the value and ingredients for. Several times, I released my energetic beetles and possibly my bladed beetles to skip offering those to him, then realized I could simply deny him the trade, then sell him the beetles that I hadn't traded with him. This is actually slightly slower than releasing 5 beetles, but faster than releasing 27.

Just for reference, if you deny a trade of either of the other two types of beetles, he takes it much better. I mean, not great, but he doesn't seem like he's going to hire thugs to mug you over it.

...
Oh. And here I thought I knew what kind of person you were...
No, it's fine.
Beedle just isn't a very good judge of character, apparently...
Anyway, back to business...

I'm not sure if I'll ever get around to doing stats for Beedle at all of the stables. Possibly that will depend on whether it seems there are marked differences between the first other stables I check.

Update: I've not done formal stats at all the stables, but they seem fairly consistent. Tgape (talk) 08:09, December 14, 2020 (UTC)
