After Link completes the Temple of Time, the next time he encounters the Postman, he will be given a letter from Renado, the shaman of Kakariko Village. Entitled "About Ilia's memory...", it says:

"[Link], There is something about Ilia's memory that I wish to tell you. I know you are busy, but please come visit me in my sanctuary in Kakariko Village."

— Renado

After Link travels to Kakariko and enters the Sanctuary, Renado tells him that, after Shad came to Kakariko to study the statue in the Sanctuary's basement as part of his research on the "heavens", Ilia remembered someone "talking about the rod of the heavens, or something like that...". From this, Gor Coron believes that the way to recover Ilia's memory is to retrace her steps from the first place she remembers, and Renado agrees. To that end, he gives Link another letter to take to Telma, who cared for Ilia in her bar, since he himself "cannot abide Telma's company".

On giving her the letter, Telma is put out that Renado doesn't mention her, but readily agrees to "lend a hand for that adorable little girl!" Since Dr. Borville brought Ilia to the bar, Telma points Link toward him, with the vast invoice for his bar tab as an incentive for the "crusty old bat" to help.
