Nintendo Power: September/October 1988 is the second issue of Nintendo Power magazine. Up through the end of 1990, Nintendo Power magazine volumes were released covering two-month periods of time, and they were not generally numbered in or on the magazine until Volume 16 (September/October 1990), although "Strategy Guide" issues before this carried a dual "SGxx/NPxx" numbering.

Zelda Content

Insiders' Calandar (foldout)

The issue came with a foldout calandar highlighting holidays, important dates throughout the year, and miscellaneous Nintendo related dates.

  • December 17th: "First 1,000,000 Zelda's sold (1987)"
  • March 22nd: "Princess Zelda awakens"

Counselors' Corner (pp. 64-65)

In the Counselors' Corner, there are four answers to frequent questions for The Legend of Zelda, with two of them focusing on the Second Quest.

Finding Level Seven

  • "In the First Quest of The Legend of Zelda, where is Level Seven?"

Level Seven can be found by using the Whistle, while standing next to a pond in the western portion of Hyrule.

How to Enter Level Nine

  • "How do I get into Level Nine and what special items can I find inside?"

At the far north of the map, there are two large rocks known as Spectacle Rock. Placing a Bomb along the left wall revealed the entrance to Death Mountain. Inside, Link will find the Red Ring and Silver Arrow.

2nd Quest: Finding the Letter

  • "In the Second Quest of The Legend of Zelda, how do I find the Letter?"

Link will need to first acquire the Power Bracelet before he can find the Letter. The Power Bracelet in the Second Quest is located in the same spot as in the first quest, underneath an Armos, a few screens east of the Graveyard. Once Link acquires the Power Bracelet, he can head to a screen that is near the far northwest corner of the map and push a rock out of the way, revealing a staircase that leads to the Letter.

2nd Quest: Finding the Raft

  • "I've looked everywhere but I can't find the Raft. Where is it?"

In Level Four, after reaching the room with the Triforce, Link can walk north through an invisible door. After traveling a few screens north, he can push a block, revealing a staircase that leads to the Raft.

Pak Watch (p. 85)

An update to the release of The Adventure of Link is provided in the Pak Watch section. It comes in the form of a better from Link. Unfortunately due to a computer chip shortage, the main release of The Adventure of Link had been delayed until early 1989. Although there is a note that the game will be available in very limited quantities as early as November of 1988.

Dear Zelda,
I'm here in Kyoto with my programmer Mr. Miyamoto, and I'm afraid I have some bad news to tell you. Are you sitting down? (That's right, you're lying down) Anyway, they tell me I will not be able to begin my journey until the new year. It has something to do with computer chips or something. I know we hoped to spend the holidays together, but I'm sure you can hold on a little bit longer. I miss you desperately.
Yours forever,
LINK

Note: Sorry for the bad news. LINK will be available in very limited quantities in November.

NES Journal (p. 95)

In the NES Journal, there are interviews with several NFL players, including Ron Morris, Eric Dickerson, and Sean Jones. They each mention some of their favorite titles with Dickerson being mentioned as somebody who plays Baseball, Punch-Out!!, 10-Yard Fight, Golf, and The Legend of Zelda.

Mail Box (p. 96)

In the Mail Box section, multiple comments about The Legend of Zelda are made. Jim and Dot McGirr share their anticipation for the upcoming The Adventure of Link, having already beaten The Legend of Zelda. A question from Brian Clegg asks how long game cartridges last, citing a rumor that they only last 5-years long. Nintendo Power responded that the games should last indefinitely, but cited that game like The Legend of Zelda have a battery for memory. While even that should last for longer than five years, if at some point there is a problem, Nintendo Power encouraged viewers to contact their consumer service line.
