Type

Mattison's Independence is a Side Adventure in Tears of the Kingdom.

Overview

Due to Gerudo law Mattison, the daughter of Hudson and Rhondson, must leave Tarrey Town for Gerudo Town before she becomes old enough to be fully aware of the difference between voe and vai. Link must help Hudson come to terms with this, partly by helping Mattison do various tasks for "every-son" before she leaves.

Requirements

The quest is available as soon as Link arrives at Tarrey Town.

Walkthrough

  • Speak with Rhondson and Hudson of Hudson Construction at Tarrey Town to begin the quest. Hudson is distraught as his daughter Mattison is coming of age and will be leaving to go live at Gerudo Town to learn the ways of the Gerudo. Hudson wants to think of something nice to do for his daughter.
  • Speak with Hudson and he mentions that due to Gerudo law, Mattison will be leaving for Gerudo Town shortly. Hudson wants to give his daughter a big sendoff. Him and his wife are so busy that they hardly get to spend time with their daughter. Hudson just wishes somebody could spend some time with her.
  • Mattison will then head off to her room on the second floor where she is studying Gerudo. Her house is the same location where Link first spoke with Hudson and Rhondson. Link can head upstairs and speak to her where she is indeed practicing her Gerudo. She mentions that she wants to practice with her grandma, Monari and tells Link to join her.
  • Mattison will run to the center of town, near Monari to practice. She mentions that it is a special occasion as Link is joining for class. She asks what the Gerudo word for 'Granny' is, and the correct answer is 'Vaba!'. Mattison will next want to help her father with his work. She'll run off to go ride a railcar to the job site.
  • Mattison now wants to ride the railcar to get to the construction site, but she doesn't have rupees to pay to ride the railcar. She wonders if maybe there's a way to obscure Hagie's eye sight so she can sneak on. Link can throw a puffshroom to obscure his view. Alternatively, he can build something - for instance, using the Wooden Boxes that are on the other side of Tarrey Town, as well as a wooden plank on the adjacent house, or boards with Hudson face kept right behind Haggie. Together, he can create a barrier to obscure Haggie's view. (Be careful not to knock anything into Hagie, otherwise it will start over.) Once his view is obscured, speak with Mattison and she'll sneak onto the railcar.
  • Link can then ride the railcar to reach the Hudson Construction Site. Run ahead and speak with Mattison and Hudson. Hudson has finally thought of something to do for his daughter and has created her a Hot-Air Balloon. Mattison interrupts and says that she loves the balloon and that it looks like the sun. This encourages Hudson to color the balloon yellow. He then tasks Link with finding ten Sundelions.
  • Mattison hints that Sundelion are bright-yellow flowers and are common up on the Sky Islands. In particular, they are common over at Courage Island, above the Thundra Plateau.
  • After Link gives Hudson 10 Sundalions, the balloon will be yellow and morning of the next day has come. Mattison is sound asleep, until her mother comes to inform them that the escort to Gerudo Town has arrived. The group takes a trip in the Hot-Air Balloon, one last time as a family. Then the whole town wishes Mattison goodluck as she heads out on the adventure.
  • Rhondson and Hudson will each give Link a Silver Rupee for a total of 200 rupees as his thanks for helping out with Mattison.

Adventure Log

Step Description
1
Hudson and Rhondson of Hudson Construction were discussing the pending departure of someone named Mattison. Rhondson seemed upbeat about it, but Hudson looked sad.

He appears to be worried about something.
2
It seems Hudson's only daughter, Mattison, is moving to Gerudo Town on her own in accordance with Gerudo law.

Both Hudson and Rhondson regret that they are too busy to play with Mattison, especially since it won't be long before she leaves.
3
Hudson and Rhondson's daughter, Mattison, is studying the Gerudo language in preparation for her move.

She's going to find Granny Monari, and said something about giving her a quiz...
4
Mattison has been teaching the Gerudo language to the people of Tarrey Town so that her mother, Rhondson, won't feel so lonely.

Now she's headed toward the railcar. She wants to help her father, Hudson, who's been very busy with work.
5
Mattison wants to go to the job site to help Hudson with his work—but Hagie, who's in charge of the railcar that extends to the site, is charging a toll.

Mattison doesn't have any money and is, instead, trying to figure out a way to obscure Hagie's line of sight.
6
Mattison managed to evade Hagie and ride the railcar. Was she was able to meet up with Hudson at the worksite?
7
Hudson is trying to make a balloon for Mattison to help his daughter's departure feel like a grand celebration.

He needs 10 sundelions so he can dye it yellow—Mattison's favorite color.
Complete
Along with Rhondson, Hudson, and the people of Tarrey Town, you saw Mattison off on her journey to Gerudo Town. If you go to Gerudo Town, perhaps you can see Mattison again.
