"You got the Hero's New Clothes... What the...? Wow! They're really light..."

— In-Game Description, The Wind Waker

The Hero's New Clothes are an item that appears in The Wind Waker and Phantom Hourglass.

The Wind Waker

In The Wind Waker, the Hero's New Clothes are an unlockable item that only appears after completing the game once. The concept of the Hero's New Clothes comes from the fairy tale of the Emperor's New Clothes. After restarting the game on the same save file, Grandma gives Link these clothes instead of the classic Hero's Clothes. The clothes are described as being visible only to those who are honest, and Link is unable to see them.[1][2] With them, Link is seen in his Outset Island clothes throughout the entire game, due to the actual outfit being invisible or, if the reference to the Emperor's New Clothes story is taken into account, nonexistent.

Phantom Hourglass

The Hero's New Clothes also appear in Phantom Hourglass as the first item in the game's Trading Sequence, which in the end grants Link the Swordsman's Scroll. Link receives it from the Man of Smiles as a thank you for rescuing him, but like in The Wind Waker, he is unable to see anything.[3] He tells Link that they were worn by an ancient hero.[4] When Link takes them to Nyeve, he immediately "senses" the Hero's New Clothes.[5] If Link gives him the Hero's New Clothes, Nyeve exchanges it for the Kaleidoscope.[6][7]

  1. "I've been waiting for you, [Link]. Here you are, [Link]. Try these on! These are special clothes...made of a special fabric that only the honest can see!" — Grandma, The Wind Waker.
  2. "What's the matter? Why the long face? You CAN see them, can't you? Hm hm hm... Well, today is the day we commemorate the fact that you've reached the same age as the hero of the legends! You have to be proud about that for at least one day! Put them on and see if you can't fool anybody in town!" — Grandma, The Wind Waker.
  3. "Oh, I am terribly sorry. You are the one who helped me...yes? I should do something to thank you. Yes, I will give you a present." — Man of Smiles, Phantom Hourglass.
  4. "Those clothes were said to have been worn by a hero of ancient times. They are rare garments said to hold truth. Very mysterious, yes?" — Man of Smiles, Phantom Hourglass.
  5. "Don't try to hide it! I'm still the hero, you know! I SENSE things! Those things casting off such pure light...can be none other than... The Hero's New Clothes-- the clothes that only honest people can see! Right?" — Nyeve, Phantom Hourglass.
  6. "Would it be possible to convince you to give those to me? That's a collector's item that my fans go absolutely crazy over! I've been looking around for those forever! [.]Take 'em[.]No way!" — Nyeve, Phantom Hourglass.
  7. "Whoa! YES! I knew you were a good kid all along! I mean...thank you. How gracious of you. Here! You can have this in return!" — Nyeve, Phantom Hourglass.
