The Bird-Man Contest is a mini-game situated in the Flight Control Platform of the Great Sea, operated by Willi and Obli.

Location

The Bird-Man Contest can be found at the Flight Control Platform, which is located one square to the east of Dragon Roost Island. Link can participate by paying 10 Rupees.

Objective

Link has to use the Deku Leaf to fly above the ocean and reach the banner that serves as the finish line. While on the fly, Link can bump into the cyclones, which boosts Link's speed skyward, easily reaching farther to the banner. It is essential that Link play the Wind's Requiem and assure that the wind is blowing towards the finish line.

While Link can play the game as soon as he has completed the Forbidden Woods, he cannot actually win the game. In order to do so, Link will need to get the Magic Meter Upgrade, given to Link by the Great Fairy who is located at the Two-Eye Reef.

There are four cyclones. The first cyclone should be completely ignored as it is too close to the starting point and has not real practical use. Link is able to win the game using only the second cyclone. Link can leap off the ledge as soon as the second cyclone starts moving from left to right. Gliding with the Deku Link, Link can just aim straight ahead towards the banner in the distance. As long as he veers ever so slightly to the left, he'll hit the second cyclone. This updraft will launch Link further in the air, at which point he can then glide to the banner. The last three cyclones can give Link a boost, but they are not necessary to reaching the end goal.

Rewards

After gliding for more than 250 yards, Link will be rewarded by Willi with a Piece of Heart. Link can play again and if he reaches the banner, he'll be given a Purple Rupee, worth 50 Rupees. Even if Link breaks his previous record, he'll only be rewarded with a Purple Rupee.
