Anouki Estates

The Anouki Estates are luxurious homes on the Isle of Frost in Phantom Hourglass that Anouki live in.[1] In the six different homes live the Anouki: Dobo, Kumu, Fofo, Gumo, Aroo, and Mazo. According to the Chief of the Anouki, one of the citizens living on the estates when Link arrives really isn't an Anouki, but rather a Yook who had kidnapped the real Anouki and taken his place.[2][3] He asks for Link's help in finding out which of the inhabitants was the impostor.[4] The only information the Chief can give Link is that the Anouki will always tell the truth, while the Yook will always lie.[5]

Finding the Impostor

Each Anouki in a house will give Link one bit of information, and using the details they give him, he must figure out which one is lying and is the Yook in disguise. What each Anouki tell Link is as follows:

  • Mazo: "They call me Mazo. I don't care if you believe me, but me and Dobo only tell the truth. Just thought I'd say that."[6]
  • Fofo: "Yeah, I'm Fofo. Gumo and me, we never lie. It's a rule we got, so neither of us is the Yook!"[7]
  • Dobo: "They call me Dobo. Mazo's real honest. The guy never lies!"[8]
  • Kumu: "I'm Kumu. See, either Mazo or Aroo is lying to you... And that's the truth!"[9]
  • Gumo: "My name's Gumo. Either Fofo or Aroo has gotta be lying to you. I just wanted to tell you that..."[10]
  • Aroo: "My name's Aroo. Between you and me, Kumu is lying. And I'll leave it at that."[11]

Hintobo will also offer a hint for 100 Rupees if Link is confused.[12]


Spoiler Alert! This section describes a subject that is sensitive to plot development.

Using the information from the Anouki, Link can quickly tell which of them is the impostor. Mazo tells Link that him and Dobo never lie, and Dobo tells Link the same. Since only one of the Anouki is lying, that means that both Mazo and Dobo are telling the truth. Fofo says that he and Gumo never lie. If Fofo was lying that would mean that Gumo's statement would be false as well, but since there is only one liar that means that they are both telling the truth. Since we already know that Fofo and Gumo are both telling the truth, then Gumo's statement of either Fofo or Aroo lying shows that Aroo is the real liar. When Link confronts Aroo about being the Imposter Yook, he reveals himself as a Yook, but then tricks Link into being blown out of the house.[13][14]
