Wii U’s throwback to the Wii’s 2007 launch title Wii Sports is called Sports Connection, and some new details on how its baseball game works has surfaced from a playable demo. Swinging the bat works pretty much the same way as in every baseball game to come out on the Wii, but it’s in pitching and catching that the Wii U differs.

The player pitching now controls the GamePad, and instead of controlling your pitch by combining button pressing and tilting the analog stick, you now draw your ball’s trajectory out on the GamePad. While that works well, the creative part comes in on catching. When the batter hits the ball, the pitcher then changes to a catcher, and the GamePad becomes your glove. A yellow dot indicates where to point the controller, and you tilt it up for air balls or down for grounders.

It’s very simple, but does add an extra layer to the game from the previous entry. There’s no word yet on if this is going to be a stand-alone title or included with the Wii U console. Personally I don’t think a game like this can stand on its own, especially with a $50 or $60 price tag. If it’s packaged with the Wii U, I look forward to trying it out for myself then.
