In a recent interview, Shikata, director of Tri Force Heroes, discusses the reasoning behind what may be a frustrating feature for some players: shared health. Some gamers may wonder why each of the three Links couldn’t get his own set of hearts.

When pressed for an explanation behind the mechanic, Shikata offered this simple phrase in response: “Because it’s better.” The director went on to explain that “[it’s] also because you need all three players to beat each level, so if one person could die and leave the others alive, you’d all be screwed.”

The logic behind Shikata’s reasoning certainly makes sense. If each player had their own set of hearts, that would leave open the possibility of one or two Links dying, and whoever was left would be faced with an impossible to solve dungeon. From what I can tell, Nintendo is working hard to perfect three player mode within Tri Force Heroes, ensuring that no elements of the game interfere with team play. Sharing health certainly seems to be in the cooperative spirit of the game, as well.

What do you think of Shikata’s explanation for shared health? Do you think this is the best way to go about the health system in the game?
