In an age of digital libraries and endless streaming subscriptions, you may find yourself longing for a simpler time; a time when purchasing something meant really owning it. For all of you nostalgia-seekers, the time to relive the past is now! The Legend of Zelda‘s wonderfully campy 1989 animated series is returning to DVD October 22nd. First published to DVD in 2005, this collection includes every episode of the classic animated series.
The Legend of Zelda originally aired 13 episodes between September and December 1989 as part of The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! Heavily inspired by the first two Zelda games, the show follows Link and Zelda as they thwart the evil — and sometimes silly — plans of Ganon and his minions. It’s legacy is marked by its campy tone, its distinctly 80s art style, and its use of in-game sound effects to remind viewers that, yes, this is indeed a Zelda show.
Critics of the show remark on its campiness, mostly notorious in Link’s signature catchphrase, “Well, excuuuuse me, princess!”, and in his constant attempts to win Zelda’s affection. This differentiated greatly from the perceived tone of the games, which at that time was generally grounded and serious.
The Zelda show wasn’t all bad though. One commendable quality is its attempts to provide practical explanations for gameplay mechanics that are often taken for granted by players. Link is able to carry all of his equipment because he has a magical pouch that shrinks items down for carrying. Enemies respawn because Link’s Sword Beam doesn’t kill them, but rather traps them in Ganon’s “Evil Jar.”
The show also does a great job at implementing orchestral renditions of the original game’s soundtrack.
If you’re interested in giving this fun piece of Zelda history a try, the complete series can be yours on DVD for just $13.59 USD. Unfortunately, it is only available in NTSC format (sorry, PAL friends). Pre-orders are available now through Amazon, Walmart, and Target.
Will you be picking up the complete series of The Legend of Zelda on DVD? What memories do you have of this show? Should Nintendo take another crack at an animated Zelda series? Let us know in the comments below!
