Peter_M_TPAs one of the oldest, and arguably greatest, video game franchises around, it isn’t uncommon to see Zelda titles make lists of personal favorite games of all time. When famous game designer Peter Molyneux, the man behind the Fable series, was asked to list his top five favorite games recently, one Zelda game made the list. As you already know from reading the title of this article, that game is Twilight Princess.

Peter Molyneux’s five favorite games are World of Warcraft (PC 2004), Clash of Clans (iOS 2012), Half-Life 2 (PC 2004), Ico (PS2 2001) and, of course, Twilight Princess, released on GameCube and Wii in 2006. He was concise when describing why Twilight Princess, famous for its quasi-realistic graphics and the lovable imp Midna, made his list.

“I just feel it’s (The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess) jaw-dropping and its use of the hardware was brilliant. And I’ve played that game through several times.”

Twilight Princess being Molyneux’s favorite Zelda game makes sense when you consider his history. Though a skilled developer by all accounts, Molyneux is often accused of enthusiastically over-hyping his games, especially when it comes to Fable. Likewise, Twilight Princess also received extreme amounts of hype before release. Nintendo promoted it excessively with jaw-dropping trailers. Expectations were raised so high, it’s understandable why some Zelda fans feel the game didn’t completely deliver. This sentiment is something people familiar with Molyneux’s games can sympathize with.

Despite all the controversy surrounding it, Twilight Princess is definitely an amazing game. I don’t personally think it’s the finest entry in the series (I usually consider it my least favorite of the 3D Zelda games), but even an average Zelda is a cut above most other games. Quality dungeon design, impressive scale and memorable characters are all recognizable strengths in Twilight Princess.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that many of these attributes can also be found in Fable. Twilight Princess‘s visuals are also very similar to Molyneux’s popular fantasy RPG series. Their graphical styles are skewed towards a kind of stylized realism that lends their worlds a surreal fantasy quality. Character designs in particular are proportionally exaggerated in both Twilight Princess and Fable.
