31 unique pieces, each done within a short timeframe. I have completed the Linktober art challenge for my second time, and I feel great! Here’s my last week’s worth of pieces!

Day 25: Lens of Truth

This one is a switch up from my norm. I decided to create a meme for the Lens of Truth prompt. Using the lens on the Phantom Ganon painting reveals the truth: it is actually Yer Baby by Ringo Star. Yer Baby is one of Ringo Stars’ many MS Paint pieces, and I created this piece also using MS Paint.

Day 26: Pirate

For this piece, rather than hatching and cross hatching I experimented with screentones for my first time. I felt like it worked well for this one. I originally tried hatching for it, but it didn’t look right to me. I then carried the use of screentones into the next day.

Day 27: Zelda

I am somehow better at drawing Ocarina of Time Zelda than I am at drawing Link from the game. I ended up being really sparse with the ink fills that I was doing in other pieces, opting for the screentones instead.

Day 28: Shop/Merchant

The Happy Mask sidequest was a really cool part of Ocarina of Time that I never finished as a kid. I managed to get up to the Bunny Hood and then progress came to a standstill. For years I had no idea who might possibly want it. Eventually I was out exploring Hyrule Field I found the Running Man, and the pieces came together. Although the reward of completing this sidequest is small (rupees gained that will probably max your current wallet, and the Mask of Truth) the fun is in the journey, and the NPCs that you meet.

This was my first time doing a pure ink drawing for an interior, normally I’d just go with color instead, but I felt sticking with ink would be faster.

Day 29: Ganon/Ganondorf

I already did Ganondorf during the first week, and I decided to do the Redesign Ganondorf’s Outfit prompt from the Shadow Calender as well. I ended up drawing Ocarina of Time Ganon, and the end result is a sort of manga style version of him that I think is really cool.

Day 30: Ruins

For this day I had 2 other ideas I was heavily considering. I wanted to either do the Zonai Ruins in the Faron region of Breath of the Wild, specifically the dragon’s head leading to the Spring of Courage, or the Ranch Ruins in the east of Hyrule Field. However the idea came to me to do Link in the Shrine of Resurrection instead. Physically he is healed, but he will awake to find his memory in ruins, hence the title of the piece: Memory in Ruin.

Day 31: Free for All

I knew I was going to cap off Linktober with a painting of Ocarina of Time‘s ending screen for multiple days now. I woke up this morning and speed painted this, it only took about 15 minutes. Maybe I’ll go back to it to refine it a bit more, after all there are a lot of pieces I did that I could add color to at a later point in the year, or next year.

Bonus: Redesign Ganondorf’s Outfit (Work in Progress)

Final Week Takeaway

I did what I set out to do: I never fell behind more than a day, I definitely feel more familiar with using my graphic tablet, and while there is still a lot of features in Krita that I haven’t gotten around to utilizing, I think I have gained proficiency with the basics of digital art.

While I will continue to primarily use my tablet to draw, it will never completely replace a sketchbook. There is something about the sound of lead on paper that is just soothing while drawing, and the tablet can’t replicate that. I’d also rather take my sketchbook and pencils with me to a coffee shop, or outdoors because I don’t have to worry about wires or my laptop’s battery getting low.

In the future I will apply color to some of my pieces from this challenge that I left as either sketches or inked. I will be inking and coloring the redesign of Ganondorf, but after that I will be taking a well deserved break for a while. It has been a lot of fun doing Linktober this year. Looking forward, if I take the challenge on again next year I will begin work on the pieces months in advance so that every piece has a finished polish.

To wrap things up, thank you to anyone who has read along as I posted these. Thank you to all my friends, old and new, who supported me throughout the month. Whether it was giving me inspiration for a prompt, an art tip, or liking my tweets, it means a lot! Last but not least, thank you Joel, and the Linktober community for hosting this challenge, and creating such a welcoming community for artists!
