For a series so heavy with its own innovative musical content, The Legend of Zelda‘s fanbase never fails to deliver when it comes to fan music projects. From fully orchestrated albums, to jazz covers, Zelda fans capture the essence of the franchise while giving it their own spin. YouTube user mammaTune is no different. In their recent upload, they’ve taken the main theme from Tears of the Kingdom and converted it into an NES-style chiptune track! This adaptation perfectly captures the upbeat sound of the original composition, while giving it that funky Mega Man-style backbeat that the NES era is so well known for.

As an added bonus, we get some pretty fantastic pixel art. There’s a shot of Link standing on some Sky Islands with a blinking “Press Start” hovering above his beautiful locks. Around the 30 second mark, we get an another beautiful shot of Zelda holding the damaged Master Sword. Once the beat drops, we see the iconic image of Link diving out of the sky, with Hyrule in the background. And to wrap up the video, we get portraits of Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf in the pixel art style. As far as fan projects go, mammaTune could have just slapped a thumbnail on their track and called it a day, but the addition of the animation is simply icing on the pixelated cake.

If you like this 8-bit arrangement, be sure to check out more from mammaTune’s YouTube channel here. They’ve released NES-style renditions of tracks from other popular games and movies, like Pokemon and Kiki’s Delivery Service.

What do you think of this exciting new fan project? Personally, I love the way that the saxophone sounds in 8-bit; but let us know your own thoughts in the comments below!
