The Legend of Zelda is at its core the Legend of the Triforce, a centuries long battle for power that began the moment the Goddesses left the Golden Power behind in Hyrule. The reincarnation of the Goddess Hylia, her chosen hero, and the embodiment of evil are locked in an ever-recurring conflict. But, if good can never ultimately overcome evil, what’s the point in fighting? Content creator MaskedNintendoBandit argues that the preservation of life itself is.

A never-ending struggle of regional, if not global, proportions isn’t something I would wish upon anyone. But, the video is right in its deduction that without this struggle the world as the Goddesses intended it would fall apart. The foil to chaos is order, but neither could exist without the other. It seems to me that this large-scale conflict serves as a sort of flu shot warding off evil for a while, allowing for extended periods of peace among lands. But once chaos starts to return, Link and Zelda must find the antidote to this new strain of evil. Without that repeated battle, there might instead be more rampant immorality in the world balanced out by small but consistent instances of order.

If you enjoyed this video, MaskedNintendoBandit has a variety of other Zelda theory and exploration videos on his channel, including a series on Hyrule’s demons.
