Breath of the Wild has had an enormous impact on the Zelda community, as well as the wider video game community as a whole. The game has inspired an enormous amount of music covers, art pieces, and fan animations. Overall, I’ve been drawn to some of the art and animations that imagine Link, Zelda, and other characters in different settings, whether it is feudal Japan or the 21st century world.

This fan animation created by Sharlene Yap imagines Link and Zelda in a modern setting. Titled “Commute”, it imagines the two characters taking a quiet train ride. The video opens with an exhausted Zelda studying some science note cards while waiting for her train. Link, who is also on the platform, accompanies Zelda onto the train. As the video progresses, the animator does an amazing job of conveying emotions through expressions and the relatively simple movements of the characters. It is a very warm video that will put a smile on your face as you watch it.

One of the things I love the most about this animated piece is how many small details are packed into the relatively short video. For example, Zelda is wearing an Ocarina of Time/Majora’s Mask-style fairy necklace (the fairy is pink). Link’s bag and jacket both have Triforce or Wing Crest logos on them. There are posters for what seem to be the classic Zelda Lon Lon or Romani Ranch milk. And finally, when Zelda is sitting on the train, she sits next to an elderly Impa from Breath of the Wild.

If you are interested in more fan animations like “Commute”, Sharlene Yap also has another fan animation called “Texting” that was uploaded earlier this year. For anyone who has ever waited in suspense to see if a friend or potential significant other will text them back, this is a video you can relate to.
