Welcome to Zelda Dungeon’s other new weekly music feature, The Windmill Hut! Here at Zelda Dungeon, we understand that people have different tastes in music, so we thought it would be best to diversify our music features by having two.

First off, let me introduce myself and show my credentials in reviewing Zelda music (pretty much, why you should listen to me and care about my opinions).

My name is Alexander. I play the piano, ocarina, guitar, and trombone. If asked to play something on piano, my repertoire consists of mostly Zelda songs. Same with ocarina, but that was a given. I have been inspired by Zelda music throughout my entire musical career, learning to play as many songs as I can on all four instruments while appreciating those too difficult for my skill level. I am currently minoring in music in college and create ocarina tutorial videos (Ocarina Time) for Zelda Dungeon. To sum it all up, I know my way around Zelda music and can spot a great cover when I hear it.

(I also have a soft spot for pure piano covers.)

This all being said, I thought it would be fitting to start The Windmill Hut off with a cover of this feature’s namesake: “Song of Storms”.

Now, I would like you to listen to YouTuber silentpianomusic’s “Song of Storms” piano cover:

I love this. Not only is it improvised, but its simplicity and constant thud of the lower notes in the beginning, as well as the melodic higher part near the end, remind me of music from Skyward Sword more than anything. It is almost as though the song was revised in order to fit Skyward Sword more than Ocarina of Time, in that it has such a more dramatic tone throughout, as opposed to the more springy tunes found in the latter. (Listen to “Fi’s Theme” and you will understand what I am talking about.) I imagine Link encountering the Skyview Spring for the first time, or some other dramatic moment with a hint of unrest in the air.

YouTuber silentpianomusic’s is a German pianist who has been making performance videos for over two years. His other performances are of a variety of different styles of piano, including a cover of an awesome Celtic song, “Cooley’s Reel”. His “Song of Storms” cover is his most popular video to date.

I would love to see this pianist produce more Zelda songs. If he can turn “Song of Storms” into the chilling, suspenseful song that he did, I can only imagine what he could do to the plethora of other Zelda songs out there. (“Song of Time” would be a great one, in my opinion.) Maybe Zelda Dungeoners could convince him by leaving a bunch of comments on his videos?

What do you guys think of this cover? Does the song remind you of songs from other Zelda titles? Do you want this pianist to play more Zelda songs? Comment and let us know!
