The Wind Waker HD file size revealed

With The Wind Waker HD right around the corner, Wii U owners are being forced to make a difficult decision: should I download the game, or buy the disc? It’s a tough one, because each version of the game has its merits and drawbacks. It’s nice to have a physical copy, but those can be easily damaged or lost. But the digital copies aren’t portable, and they take up valuable storage space! So maybe the size of this game’s download will help you make your decision.

The file size for The Wind Waker HD‘s downloadable version will be about 2.6 GB. It’s actually a remarkably small size for such a game, considering it’s 1080p capabilities and extensive content. To put that in some perspective, Pikmin 3 takes up about 3.9 GB, while a game like Batman: Arkham City Armored Edition can take a whopping 19 GB. So in comparison to other games, it’s actually rather minuscule. But in comparison to your Wii U, it might be a lot more than it seems.

The Wii U is sold in a Basic or Deluxe set, having 8 GB and 32 GB internal storage space respectively. So 2.6 gigs shouldn’t be too much in either situation, right? Well actually, no. While 8 and 32 are the numbers on the box, a lot of that space is taken up by the operating system and other pre-installed software, dropping those numbers closer to the range of 3 GB and 25 GB. For the owners of the Basic Set’s white Wii U, downloading The Wind Waker HD could mean taking up almost all of your available storage space! But worry not, external storage drives are compatible with the Wii U system, so if you’re willing to drop a bit more money, you can easily download The Wind Waker HD with much room to spare.

Personally, I think it’s great that the download size is so small, especially for such a big game! I will still be purchasing a hard copy, just for collector’s purposes, but I will certainly be recommending the download to just about any Wii U owner.
