The Nintendo Switch continues to soar! According to Nintendo’s yearly financial report, as of March 31st, 2021, the Switch sold a whopping 84.59 million units since its launch! This is an impressive feat because it is now the fourth best-selling Nintendo console, surpassing the Game Boy Advance by about 3 million units.
The Switch is now possibly positioned to overtake the Wii, which has sold 101.63 million lifetime units; notably, Nintendo projects the Switch to sell 25.5 million units by next year, meaning they are not only confidently anticipating it to pass the Wii, but also to knock the PlayStation (102.49 million units) out of the top 5 best-selling consoles of all time. The second highest selling console is the Game Boy (118.69 million units), and the top spot is still dominated by the Nintendo DS (154.02 million units).
In other news, Breath of the Wild is also the fourth best-selling game for the Switch with an overall 22.28 million copies sold. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate takes third (23.84 million copies), and surprisingly Animal Crossing: New Horizons came in second (32.63 million copies), only shortly behind overall sales of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (35.39 million copies).
