News broke recently that officials in the province of Guandong have permitted investment conglomerate Tencent to distribute Nintendo Switch consoles throughout China. The consoles will reportedly feature a special “test version” of New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe.

Last year, former President of Nintendo Tatsumi Kimishima did mention the company was looking into making the Switch available in China. Some had expected that Nintendo would partner with Tencent to achieve this after collaborating to release Arena of Valor overseas on the Switch.

Back in 2000, China banned all consoles from the country. That ban was finally lifted 4 years ago. It’s nice to see the country opening up once more, allowing more of a variety of gaming platforms. It is expected that the Switch will sell very well due to its portability, seeing as how Chinese gamers had become accustomed to Mobile gaming.
