Who can resist the siren call of the mysterious Chris Houlihan room? For those who are unaware, Chris Houlihan was a person (we don’t exactly know Chris’ gender or age) who won a Nintendo Power contest to get their name in an upcoming Nintendo game. The room was accidentally discovered some years later, and it contains a telepathic tile bearing his name (along with 45 blue rupees).

The rumor of the Chris Houlihan room was addressed as the topic of the very first episode of GameTrailers’ popular “Pop Fiction” series, and it was discovered that the room is in fact real and can be accessed. They have just updated their original video, which now contains an explanation for why it exists the way it does, and the answer may surprise you.

Care to find out the story behind how this mysterious room works? Of course you do! Here’s the video in its entirety:

For those who didn’t watch it (or refused to do so for reasons related to an eternal blood vendetta of some sort), here’s how the room works. The Chris Houlihan room is actually the debug room of the game, and it’s accessed when the game can’t understand Link’s placement on the Y-axis. In other words, if you mess up entering a cave or another region by using a combination of some sort of damage (bombs, enemies, etc.) and the pegasus boots and fall down a hole from the south (any hole leading to a location in the game), you’ll be sent to the Chris Houlihan room.

Now, there’s still one mystery to all of this. Who exactly is Chris Houlihan? Does he even know his name is in A Link to the Past, or did he grow out of video games and simply blend into the rest of life? What do you think ever happened to this illusive man (no Mass Effect reference intended)? Comment away!
