Darksiders released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 way back in January of 2010 and the similarities between Darksiders and the Legend of Zelda could be found in almost every critical review of the title. I never had a chance to play the game when it first released, but for the last week or so, I’ve steadily been going through the game and I can totally see the Legend of Zelda connections.

The game is significantly more action based than any Legend of Zelda title has ever been. Part of Darksiders makes it feel like a beat ’em up game, just running along a path defeating a seemingly endless amount of enemies. You constantly find yourself in these enemy gauntlets, having to defeat 15-20 enemies in a row before you can progress to the next area. It wasn’t until I reached the first dungeon, the Twilight Cathedral, did I really get the idea of… hey, this is a Legend of Zelda type game. You wander through this massive dungeon, search for keys to open locked doors, backtrack to familiar rooms, fight mini-bosses, get a dungeon item, use that dungeon item to solve puzzles and progress further, and then use that dungeon item again to defeat the boss. Does that sound like the Legend of Zelda or what?

The story seemed quite a bit heavy at first and I was a bit lost as to what was going on. There have been plenty of cinematic cut-scenes throughout and I’m starting to really enjoy the storyline. You play as War, one of the Four Horseman of the Apocolypse and he’s really a badass. He’s much more violent than Link has ever been and well, he speaks. He doesn’t have the charm that Link has and in general the game doesn’t look or feel very Zelda-like. It just plays Zelda-like and has many of the same gameplay elements.

Bottomline is that Darksiders is a great game from what I’ve played thus far. The beginning was incredibly combat heavy and it did take me quite some time to really get into the game. However, once I made it to the leadup to the first dungeon and now I find myself at the second dungeon, it’s a great game. The combat is above average and the puzzles are lots of fun. I’m not ready to say it’s a “more bloody and violent” Legend of Zelda game, but rather, I’m just going to say it’s clearly inspired by the Zelda series. Zelda fans who don’t mind the more mature content and have a PS3 or Xbox 360 should definitely consider Darksiders. If you aren’t quite sold on it yet, check out our live stream throughout the week and watch for yourself.

For us Nintendo fans, I’m pleased to say that Darksiders II is scheduled to be a launch title for the upcoming Nintendo Wii U. While I’m not quite at the half way point of the first Darksiders, if things continue the way they have been going, I certainly see myself picking up Darksiders II when I get my Wii U later this year.
