“Song of Healing” has always occupied a strange place in Zelda’s music catalog. One of the key songs from Majora’s Mask, “Song of Healing” can be a simultaneously relaxing and haunting tune. In the game, Link uses the song to ease the troubled spirits of Darmani III of the Gorons, and Mikau of the Zora. The action of playing the song frees the troubled spirits and leaves Link with the Goron and Zora mask respectively. The song’s association with death can be quite eerie, though its in-game role of freeing others of pain and regret keeps the melody from feeling morbid.

This acoustic arrangement of “Song of Healing” by Run on Music taps into the peaceful aspect of the song. The main instruments used in this piece are classical guitar, mandolin and cello; a trio that works very well. In the description for the video, Run on Music gives some insight into how the trio works together. Run on Music asserts that the cello is there just to support the rest of the ensemble, while the guitar is there to hold a steady arpeggiation so that the mandolin can really push the melody. This is great insight into how each individual instrument fits into the larger arrangement.

Run on Music asserts that “Song of Healing” highlights the beauty of life through the acceptance of death and the many different ways it is processed. This is one of best descriptions of the song I have heard and it cuts to the core of the overall theme within Majora’s Mask. This arrangement has a slow but steady tempo, which really does give the listener a chance to relax and take a break. It feels like this is a great musical choice for quiet moment of reflection and contemplation!
