We recently revealed that Ura Zelda has been effectively canned, but that doesn’t mean the folks behind it wanted to see their work get completely unappreciated. I have in my possession a nice file that contains a lot of bits and pieces pertaining to Ura Zelda, but for now I am just going to release all of the screenshots and concept art contained in the file. There appears to be an awful lot of “behind the scenes” drama, some of which we will elaborate in a different post at another time. For now, lets just appreciate all the work that went into it, with the game mod/new zelda title we will never see. Hop inside.

By now, most of us are probably pretty familiar with Ura Zelda. Originally designed and planned as an expansion for Ocarina of Time alongside Zelda Gaiden, this game was going to include new, alternate, and more difficult dungeons and would be released on the Nintendo 64 disk drive. It was eventually cancelled and only surfaced partially in Ocarina of Time Master Quest while its brother Gaiden evolved into Majora’s Mask. For years now, a fan project was in the works…

Back during the wake of Ocarina of Time’s release there were two

Zelda titles in the works, one of which was specifically designed for the 64DD add-on,

something that never took off. One game was to feature Hyrule with an all new

story, enemies, dungeons… it was essentially Ocarina of Time 2 in the exact

same world. The other was in a different land, and eventually was released a

year later as Majora’s Mask. The first one was technically one of the original

forms of Ocarina of Time, which was later sliced down to the game we know and

love today. However, it was said there was enough left over content to actually

create an entirely new game… hence URA Zelda, the game that never was.

Above is a video of Ura Zelda, a project that was started by a

person known at Zeth. He had a team of people helping in not only restoring the

assets that they could find on the project itself, but piecing it all together

with new content, music, and story elements to create a playable game to the

best of our unfinished game’s dreams. This project started several years ago,

and the team actually had a brief stint of teaming up with us. Unfortunately,

that fell apart. As time went on, it became less and less likely the ambitious

project would see a completion date. Now, word through the grapevine is that

the project has been completely canceled.

Parts of URA Zelda did eventually make it into Ocarina of Time’s

Master Quest version originally released on a collector’s disc and packaged in

with The Wind Waker. Unfortunately, it appears we may never see all of the lost

content from this now defunct Zelda game. You can find out more information

about Ura Zelda atZeldaPedia.

Did you know that Majora’s Mask was only released due to Eiji Aonuma’s lack of desire to create a mere expansion for Ocarina of Time which they referred to as “Ura Zelda?” This is the game that was eventually revised and released for the GameCube on a disc along with Ocarina of Time as a bonus for those who had pre-ordered The Wind Waker. Yes, originally the plan was to get a second Zelda title out on the N64 within…

Our friends over at GlitterBerri have recently put together an article discussing how Ura Zelda became Majora’s Mask. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the term, Ura Zelda was a game being designed for the Nintendo 64 Disk Drive expansion disk of the Nintendo 64. Put simply, it was a second quest of sorts for Ocarina of Time. Things got quite blurry in its development cycle as the planned Nintendo 64 Disk Drive never made its way outside…
